Unable to copy and paste very large folder

Hi I have a new hard drive so having to transfer all my data over to it. A problem I am having though is that one of my folders is 262GB and when I copy it then try to paste it into the new hard drive I get no message telling me the transfer is in progress neither do I get any sort of error message telling me I cannot do it.

Does anybody know why this is?

    Thanks

It's probably just too much for explorer - I've had problems like this before.

Try a sync program, like AllwaySync, SyncToy or Syncback. That will usually do the trick.

What OS and system are you using? Strange you don't get an error message of some kind.

This could be two things I'd imagine either some kind of fault, or some limitation of the Filesystem/OS you're using. Simplest way to tell which, is can you move small groups of files or single files?

Try creating a folder on your new drive then moving a smaller group. See if it works, if it does it's probably just too much at once and you can just move it in batches. Jim's idea of using a free sync program is a good one too.

Re: Unable to copy and paste very large folder

As it's a very large folder it might just be struggling to copy it over. Leave it and it should start to copy it over.

I would just start moving over in smaller loads, at least then you can make sure it was just that it was too much to move, and not something more problematic a little bit sooner.

Re: Unable to copy and paste very large folder

I've resorted to using SyncBack backup software as mentioned by snootyjim. Seems to be doing its thing... Doing the process in smaller chunks would have been a good safety precaution but I've already started now so will let it carry on.

    Cheers.

I have had this problem before trying to copy WOW from an old XP machine that was full of crap,
as said allready copy in small amounts.
I am thinking it is a memory problem

Agreed. Whilst it could just be down to the sheer size of the folder you were trying to transfer, this type of behaviour may suggest a problem with your RAM.
