    Re: Preparing for VCP...

    I was running vcenter4.0 on W2K3R2 x64 Sql Express 2005. I have upgraded to Sql Express 2008 - no direct path from Express 2005 to Full 2008. Prepared a new VM box W2K8R2 with Full Sql 2008. Bkup'ed VCDB. Restored it to Sql 2008. Created 64-bit DSN for vCenter4.1 VCDB and 32-Bit DSN for VUM DB. Created new VUM DB on Sql 2008. Done, tested and working. Used datamigration tool. Upgraded vSphere client on my workstation. Upgraded my 2 hosts to ESXi4.1 via vMA box. Done, tested and working fine. Enabled SSH on both hosts. Created ESX Admins Group in AD. Enabled AD integration on both hosts. I have documented everything on my OneNote file.
    It is working absolutely fine. Need to catch up with more theory to sit the exam

    I believe the Exam syllabus will be update to mention 4.1 features , but it won't just concentrate on those new features.

    The Exam itself was pretty easy but dont forget it'll cover "fat" ESX as well as ESXi so make sure you are familiar with both.

    Hi Moby, Yes I know, but thanks for pointing that out. Much appreciated. To be honest the course was mainly on the fat ESX. At work we only run the fat version. Unfortunatelly I am not the main vmware person, therefore cannot do/suggest things "my way". I personally would take the opportunity to setup our test env. on ESXi to anticipate the changes that eventually will have to be done. Anyway my goals are:
    1) Pass VCP410 asap;
    2) Develop/strengthen skills on VMware as much as possible. Will concentrate on powershell/scripting after passing VCP + get to know more Linux.
    3) Get my employer to pay me a storage course
    4) Keep my eyes peeled for future opportunities.
    Anyway, I think in IT we always need to be dinamically thinking of keeping up to date with new tech.

    Re: Preparing for VCP...

    Powershell is probably going to be more useful than scripting ? especially if you are working mainly with Microsoft kit.
    Storage courses tend to specific to a vendor - so be prepared to nail your colours to post at that point

    Re: Preparing for VCP...

    Guys, I'm looking for a term here that will describe ESX function which will automatically vMotion the VM to another ESX host if resources on that host are running low.

    Does that make sense?

    Re: Preparing for VCP...

    Do affinity rules ring any bells?

    Is it to set how low the resources have to be to vMotion the VMs over to different ESXi host in the HA cluster?

    Also can you do your exam without passing the VMware certified course? (without getting the certificate of course...) Just thinking if this can be done other way around instead of training and then exam.

    What you guys paid for your course btw?

    You have to attend the course and do the exam to become certified.

    Re: Preparing for VCP...

    Indeed , you can pass the exam , but you wont actually get a cert untill you take the course.

    The guys from Global knowledge are probably more flexible on price than QA ( certainly booking as an individual. I've been looking at the design workshop as I've got the VCAP-DCD beta in a coupel of weeks time , and GK seemed to be the best value for it. Cost wise it was a fair few years ago & I did the fast track , which wasn't cheap.

    host affinity rules - in a nutshell allow you specify wether to kepp a couple of VM's together , or to ensure they will always attempt to sit on different hosts in a cluster.

    @Moby

    Thanks for the explanation.

    Quick one - how did you guys managed to run vDR in nested environment?

    It's not possible to run x64 VM and vDR is based on CentOS 5.2 which is x64...

    Thanks for all the resources you've mentioned in this thread - I'm playing around with Esxi 5 at home, so that I can take an exam at some point in the future...

    Are there any books that you guys found particularly practical? ...I've got a exam cram book -it's fine for learning theory and best practice, but I know that stuff isnt always what you do when things go wrong!
