    Quick question

Does the little triangle denote the positive (+) terminal on the back of a power LED connector (in fact all the front panel connectors). I wouldn't ask but none of the manuals are giving me a clue and google is misunderstanding my questions.

that will be a no then

    Re: Quick question

New question for you build experts...

I'm basically ready to fire the rig up for the first time. I was wondering if it would be better to add the GPU after I've got all the basic stuff working or should I put it in now and fire it up after.

I'm going for the slow and safe build here but if it makes no difference at all I shall put the GPU in.
Also, the pci-e cable from the PSU has 2 separate 6 pin connectors. Now I'm assuming that I can use one of these for each of the 6 pin slots in the back of the 5850 rather than adding anothe cable to the PSU.

Oh! and the question above about the little triangle! ...I found the answer while I was looking for something else.

    Re: Quick question

Personally, I would add the GPU now.

As to the PCIE connector it depends on how your PSU is designed. If it has separate rails it is worthwhile taking one connector from 1 rail and another from a different rail to spread the load. If the PSU is a single rail design then just use a single lead with the two connectors to power the card.

    Re: Quick question

I would chuck it all together in one go and instal, havent had any problems doing it that way since xp first appeared.

On the led front, the led wont blow, so just plug it in. I go off cable colour, on my rig white or red is positive.

Are the PCI-E power connectors on different cable strands?

    Re: Quick question

I've got the 650w Antec True Power New modular so adding another PCI-E cable isn't a problem.
    It has 2 x 22amp rails and 2 x 25 amp rails

This is the pre connected PCI-E cable and I thought that it would be good cable management to just use this.

    Re: Quick question

One more question about the power supply. Do I use the 4 pin or 8 pin connector. The mobo came with this cover attached (denoted by the red arrow) so I assumed that I should use the 4 pin. The manual is no help as it says "connect the 8 pin/4 pin power supply" so does that mean it doesn't matter?

    Re: Quick question

It shouldn't really matter but if it's not a huge problem to route or something use the 8 pin. About your first question the positive side has a coloured wire, ground is white and the motherboard manual will tell you the layout of the pins on the header.

    Re: Quick question

It shouldn't be a problem to route...bit fiddly but no major problem.
Why do they ship it with both? Is it for legacy motherboards?

Anyway I booted it up with the 4 pin connector, got a single beep, lots of nice green lights, no flames or smoke, all the fans came on...no picture on the monitor (connected to the mobo VGA) ,left it for about 5 minutes, nothing! Switched it off, tried to change VGA for DVI...DVI connector won't fit...great. I am assuming here that the VGA will work?

By the way, I not freaking out here, I'm used to things not working first time.

A fair number of boards disable the onboard video if you have a discrete card installed.

So should I be connecting to the 5850 port? Or should I take the 5850 out?

And why of all days, after 3 years of near faultless service, does my ISP choose today to have a random fail day. No need to answer that I just needed a bit of a whinge.

    Re: Quick question

You get both 4 and 8 pin for a number of reasons, the first is some motherboards, even new ones, use 4 pin while some use the 8 pin which is capable of supplying more power for more power hungry CPUs/more overclocking headroom. However on both connectors all the wires join back together at either end, the increased number of wires just reduces resistance. Another reason is some motherboards, mainly dual-CPU server/workstation boards use both 4 and 8 pin or even two 8 pin connectors.

If you have the 5850 installed just connect to that instead.

    Re: Quick question

I took the 5850 out and changed the VGA cable, it is now installing Win 7 64 as I type this ... I only have 1 DVI cable and that is attached to my current rig which is a pain to disassemble. The 5850 has no VGA.

Many thanks for your help so far guys.

    Didn't you get a DVI-VGA converter with the 5850?

You'll just laugh when I tell you this you really will...I found the converter when I was tidying up all the boxes this morning.

Oh well no worries...I got it all working despite my distinct lack of intelligence yesterday.
