    HELP PC just shuts down

    Hi
    Newbie here
I was hoping someone could help me.
My PC has decided that everynow and then it will switch off with just the power light flashing.
It will switch back on again if I remove the mains and leave it until the light stops flashing, this can take anywhere between 10 seconds and 10 minutes.
I have replaced the PSU with no effect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

    Bungal

Heat ? Could be overheating. What temps are being reported ? What activity were you doing when it shut down ?
But we need more details - spec of the machine, OS etc.
What sort of error codes are you seeing ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Hi Phage
Dont think its heat as the PC is only on for about 10 mins at the longest and all fans are running fine and the side panel is off at the moment.
    Machine spec,
    K8N Neo4 MB, Athalon 3800+ 64 Processor,1G ram Windows XP.
No error codes are coming up and after the light stops flashing it boots up fine .
As to what it I am doing when it shuts down, It can be from a couple of firefox windows and email to just the desktop with no programs running.

Hope this helps in diagnosing the problem.

How old is the PSU ? Can you borrow a PSU to try?

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

How dusty is it? Are there any beeping/warning noises? May be worth checking what heat the CPU is running at as I had an issue with an older PC where the CPU would overheat fairly rapidly due to a poor or dusty heatsink.

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

    Hi
The temps were about 38c before the last shutdown.
The small Northbridge fan looks like it is shot, so I will try and replace that today. Bad dust build up also the CPU heatsink looks a bit full as well.

    Cheers

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

Ah - clean out all of the dust and see what happens. What are you using to measure the temps ?
A loose heat sink ? worth checking and possibly reseating with new paste.
After that, I'd start running some tests. Memtest for the RAM and HDD tune for the disk.
Oh, and make sure all of your data is backed up....

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

    Hi
I am using a thing called fanspeed.
I have now cleaned out the CPU fan and replaced the Northbridge fan.
Still doing the same thing, powers off and the power light on the front flashes for ages. Wont boot up until the light stops flashing.
Next time it powers up I wil download those programs and give them a go.
I did use fanspeed to check the HDD and it said it was ok.
Thanks to everyone who is taking time to help me.

I dont know whats worse the PC being busted or the wife complaining its not working. LOL

    Hi
Just ran Memtest and I couldnt find HDDtune but used the SMART test in Fanspeed and both passed.
Memtest I ran till it was over 100% showing no errors and SMART test came out at 98%

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

Hmmm - if not heat. Is this an original build ?
Time to start swapping out random components. It could be as simple as a faulty power switch, or as complicated as a faulty Mainboard.

Could it be that the thermal paste has dried out/not working properly? While the HSF may spin the CPU may still be getting too hot.

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

    Hi
The PC is about 4 1/2 years old, I have replaced the HD as it fell over 3 years ago.
It is an original build its an Evesham. MB is a MSI K8N Neo4 socket 939.

It is running at the moment(1hour 15) and here a couple of stats, core temp 33c, HDD 29c, CPU 36c. The side panel is off at the moment so will be a bit cooler.

When I was replacing the Northbridge fan I did redo the paste on the CPU heatsink.

I have pulled the power switch lead from the MB and will see what happens.

If I do need to replace the MB what would you recommend (I would like to keep the CPU)

Ah, I'm out of ideas then

ebay? Or possibly even your local freecycle for an old PC that you can swap parts out of. Dare say you can buy from scan/ebuyer but doubt there'll be a huge amount of choice given the age.

Re: HELP PC just shuts down

Your going to be looking at a hole new system really as your going to find it very hard to find a working socket 939 motherboard. Yes you can get them off ebay but you run the risk of it failing some months down the line and paying alot of money for it.

Just having a look now and prices range from £40 to £70 !

£70 buys you a new motherboard (I agree not Socket 939) but you get a warranty which is somethng you won't have from a second hand part on ebay. I realise that this will require a new CPU and DDR2/DDR3 ram but an excuse to have some nice new shiny hardware to play with

Get your post count up though and you can get into the forsale section, Socket 939 stuff usually comes up here quite often at a reasonable price

I would say the parts are failing because they outdated, heat issues or psu is failing.
