PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

    Hi

my pc is made up of..

    Q6600 @2.4ghz
    4 x 2GB DDR2 6400
    7200RPM 500GB HDD
    DVD+-RW
    2x 8800gtx in sli
    P5N32-E SLI Plus Mobo
    2 12cm case fans
    stock cooler

my psu is this guy here Thermaltake TR2 W0379RU 500W ATX 12V v2.2 Power Supply, sorry cant post links yet

    500W

when im gaming etc after about 20 mins my pc literally just cuts, now i don't think its a problem with the cpu as prime95 runs all night but with intense gpu usage it cuts,

i recently added the second 8800gtx,

is more power required? what should i go for if i need another psu?

    thanks

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

It'll either be heat from the GTX's or power usage from them killing the system. Check what amps the 12V rail runs and make sure it's adequate, but tbh if it's lasting 20 minutes it's likely to be temperatures.

Download speedfan and see what temps they're idling at.

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

8800GTX in Sli is quite a power hog.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Have you tried running the system with the side of the case off - does it do the same thing?

TBH my money would be on a heat issue.

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

Possibly a combination of both - as temperature rises components become less efficient and the PSU might become overloaded.

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

definatley not the cpu overheating, got one of these big a$$ akasa freedom towers on it. gets to 50 degrees max on prime95.

air coming out doesnt seem that hot apart from the PSU which is like a jet engine.

also the nb and sb are passive and apparently get really hot.

i will report the ampage on rails when i get back from work.

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

Remember though that you have to think about where the air is going as well, if a lot of your fans are pushing air around inside the case rather than exhaust fans pushing the air out of the case, then the ambient temperature inside the case will increase, so that means that the fans are trying to cool the components with hot air

Re: PC cutting out after intense usage, power issue?

i think my cooling ok, i have to input fans one on the side, one on the front and and a big 12cm exhaust out the back.

I have read up and the motherboard has two 4pin inputs for the cpu, one is blocked out as stock for single core cpus, you need both plugged in for multi core.

i distinctly remember wondering why there was a black cap block on of the power plugs, i will plug this in and try it out tonight.

    thanks everyone

    This is what I reckon it might be as 2 8800GTX in SLI are reported to use quite a bit of power ;

Add to this CPU, optical drives and whatnot I reckon 500W is breached under full load.

They were added, that's why it says 'whole system'

That is what I was talking about. If PSU is hot then it's not as efficient.
