    Not booting

After solving some BSOD problems with my computer, I was confident that my computer was back to normal. I returned to my normal PC habits.

I was playing Batman Arkham Asylum and, during a cutscene, the screen froze and the speakers produced a cackling sound. I could not ALT+TAB or CTRL+ALT+DELETE out of it so I shut down the computer manually. Since then I have been unable to restart it. Thinking it might be overheating, I've let the computer rest for an hour (this worked the last time it wouldnt restart) but it still doesnt boot up. All the components and fans seem to start up but nothing is displayed.

I thought it may be a faulty graphics card (this would have explained the previous BSOD problems I had which were graphics related) but then I realized that the computer doesnt make the usual beep when booting up nor does it make that beep to signal something is wrong. What is the issue?

I am trying resetting the CMOS to see if that works but I don't think it will. Is it really possible that a game can cause this much havoc? These problems seem to arise when playing this game so this leads me to believe so...

EDIT: btw, I have run graphics stress tests (furmark), an HDD diagnostic test (HD tune) and some CPU and RAM tests (Prime95, though admittedly only for 15 minutes)

    Re: Not booting

I have reset the CMOS and the computer boots up again. I don't understand what's happening. How can a game cause all these problems? Or is it something else that I'm not understanding?

Also, what does resetting the CMOS do exactly and how does it solve problems such as mine?

    Re: Not booting

Resetting the cmos puts the bios back to its defaults, so all timings, voltages, overclocks are all put back to stock.

You might also want to check for virus/malware as this could be a problem too

i'd recommend Anti Malwarebytes (free) and Microsoft Security Essentials (free) just google them, cause it could be something as little as an infected registry entry!

Also, check you have the latest Graphics Drivers

    Re: Not booting

I think the original problem (BSODs) was solved when I performed a system scan (sfc.exe /scannow) and it repaired some corrupt files. What is causing the problem right now is a mystery to me.

To reiterate my question: how much damage can a game do?

    Re: Not booting

Sounds like it could be a Physx problem. Batman is VERY physX intensive, and depending on your gpu setup, and the game settings, it could cause a bit of conflict....

    CHECK & UPDATE all drivers....

is it a genuine copy of batman AA?? (not accusing you, but have to ask) as some of the earlier pirate versions had deliberate bugs in to prevent piracey.

Games shouldn't really do that much damage, but it depends on the configuration of your hardware etc....

    Re: Not booting

It's a legit retail copy (i.e. not off steam). I don't think it's a bug since it doesnt occur at specific points.

I could not find out how to disable Physx (isn't it only for nvidia cards? i have a radeon 4850). I ran a GPU stress test (furmark) and that didnt cause any problems, but who knows with Batman...

I already use MSE and malwarebytes so that can't be the cause.

I am reinstalling DirectX and some drivers to see if that fixes it. It worked fine yesterday after a period when it wouldnt (the BSODs mentioned above).

    Re: Not booting

I think it's a hardware problem. You mentioned you'd ran Prime95 for 15 minutes? Run it again, this time for at least 8 hours and report back.
