Hi new member and i need some help with my cd drive
Hi everyone i was directed here by a friend as i need some help with my pc. so the problem is i plugged in an ide drive into my mobo (asus m3a78t) to back up it booted fine and i got the contents backed up fine no problem, but now my pc wont boot with my cd drive plugged in via sata i just get the blank screen with the flashing underscore then nothing. it boots fine from my hd (sata) when the cd drive is unplugged. i have tried updating the bios removing the cmos battery and bios defaults but still i get no boot can anyone shed some light on this. i have tried different sata ports and cables to no avail the cd drive was working fine before i plugged in the ide hard drive.
if you need anymore information just ask
Thanks
Hassan

you need to go into the bios and reset the boot order to the hard drive 1st

With your CDROM plugged in. If you press a hotkey, (i.e. F8) during the bios you're allowed to choose which device you want to boot from, selecting your Harddrive from this list does it boot?
Yes = Reset BIOS to Factory Defaults and try again.
No = Check cabling and wattage of PSU.

I've got the same board, not only do you have to set which type of drive which you want as the boot drive you also have to set which drive has priority over the other. Both settings are in the boot part of the bios screen.
You say an IDE drive, I'm assuming you mean the CD Drive, in which case have you checked the jumper on the drive is set correctly e.g. moved the jumper to master setting on the back of the drive if its the only one on the IDE controller ? Having the drive on the wrong setting on the jumper can sometimes cause this.

As per Behemoth's note above the options are MASTER, SLAVE and CABLE SELECT (and might be abbreviated to M / S / CS). Ideally you want M.
CS uses the position the drives is plugged in at on the cable to determine if it's salve or master: Half way along the cable - salve, end of the cable - master
IDE cable coloured end (or end furthest away from the other two connection points goes to the motherboard), the middle should be unused, the far end going to the CD drive.
