BSOD after installing graphics card, can't go into safe mode
Hi,
my sister's old graphics card (a 7600GS) decided to die after 3 years of service- it wouldn't display anything on the screen and we tried different cables. Anyway, so we bought a 9800 GT as a replacement, which arrived today. I installed it, and turned it on. So, it POSTS and then has the windows loading screen, and then has a BSOD for a second and then resets itself. It keeps doing this, and I can't even get into safe mode.
Does anyone have any ideas what to do?
System specs:
Code:
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+
MSI K9N NEO F V3
Corsair DDR2 TWINX 2GB PC6400 (2 sticks)
430W SEASONIC S12II
1 SATA hard drive
1 DVD Lightscribe
Cheers

Reset the BIOS on the motherboard (with the jumper)? Update the BIOS? Try in a different computer?
Is the OS Vista or XP? If Vista, the startup repair available in the install CD may be able to get things going again.

She's running Windows XP 32 bit, will try the BIOS reset
I've also tried different sticks of RAM so there's only 1 stick installed right now

do you have an extra HD? or maybe get a liveCD and see if it will boot up. Just wanna rule out software

Well we tried the CMOS reset, no such luck.
It's abit hard because she's halfway across the country doing her masters and doesn't know anyone who uses a desktop there. At this point, I'm thinking about doing a repair to see if that works. I've googled the card and it seems that it's given quite a few BSOD's to everyone and some have managed to fix it by doing a repair. Hard to do anything in this case since we can't get into even safe mode althrough I thought Windows would just use the standard VGA driver until she popped in the driver CD.

If you can't boot far enough in to set the SafeMode Hotkey, your Graphics Card is unlikely to be the problem, as you might suspect, SafeMode was designed to bypass these issues, it runs on basic VGA, meaning the entirety of the boot before hitting the Hotkey is also basic VGA. Ergo, you have another problem. I'd recommend popping in your Windows Setup CD and booting to Recovery Console, where my first stop would be: chkdsk /r
