    Graphics Card Problem?

    Hi,

I posted recently about an upgrade I've done to my work computer. Bit of background info:

It's a Dell Vostro 220, had a duel core E7500, intergrated graphics and 3gb DDR2. I upgraded to a quad core Q8400 and gave it 4gb ram and added a Palit Geforce GT220 (connected are 2 monitors, one a 24inch widescreen Viewsonic [with VGA], plugged into VGA to DVI convertor, into the DVI slot. The other is an 18inch dell connected straight into the VGA slot.)

Right, so onto the problem. Since installing a few days ago, it all works fine with one small problem. I've used it for hours at a time and it works perfectly well, however if I got away for a certain amount of time and come back (with the computer obviously being inactive), the 24inch is just black, as though it has no connection and the 18 inch is also black but with the mouse pointer flashing eratically (however it does move around as I move the mouse). The computer is obviously still working as I have music on, and it's still playing normally, it's just I can't see anything. The only thing I can do is to turn off by holding the on switch until it turns off and then restarting.

Any ideas :S is it the graphics card doing this? I've been running these 2 monitors through the intergrated graphics (for the 24inch) and a convertor which allows me to plug the 18inch into a USB port, for a while, with no problems at all.

    Thanks for any info.

Power saving settings. Combination of graphics card, monitor and windows. Try changing the power scheme in Windows.

    Re: Graphics Card Problem?

probably a power saving issue and the fact its a dell with custom BIOS, they do not like new parts adding in.

    Re: Graphics Card Problem?

I've get a somewhat similar problem at work, I've got two different GFX cards running 3monitors, initially it was all fine and good, but then my middle monitor has now started crapping out, cursor goes low-colour and screen eventually blacks off entirely. (Dragging my PC to a halt in the meantime). I suspect this to be down to a) My shoddy graphics cards / b) My insufficient PSU.

Assuming PowerSaving settings don't help you either, I'd recommend replacing your graphics drivers with the latest, and, problems persisting, look to replacing your 2nd GFX card.
