Connecting an old xp laptop to the internet

recently got asked to rebuild someone's laptop. Installed XP etc and now they complain that they can't access the internet. It's an old IBM thinkpad and it supposedly has wirelss built in but I've got a wireless card which is plugged in. How do I get the OS to connect to the internet? It should be easy but is proving troublesome.

What has been done so far?
Is the Wifi getting IP address settings?

It isn't really recognising the fact that it has wifi built in (which I am doubtful of tbh).
I've given the guy a USB adapter with software for now. Should work.

Wifi could be a physical switch (check body) or BIOS settings or Drivers.

Does the owner know how to connect to the wifi?

No, doesn't matter. He can work it out himself, was just wondering if I was missing anything.
    Cheers anyway

I suspect you missed the wifi card driver, pop into device manager and look there. If you see something like ethernet device and the big yellow exclamation mark next to it you know you've not installed the driver.

Don't forget that the wireless switch on Thinkpads turns off ALL wireless - onboard or external. It is a proper Airplane mode.

So if the drivers are all installed in Device Manager and you still can't connect that's most likely it.
