Monitor goes off after about an hour

I use my pc 15 hours a day and never have any problems with it.

I shut it down as normal last night only to find that when I came to it this morning there would be no display. I did everything.

    - Cleared dust, re sat everything, removed battery and put it bk in, reset cmos. unplugged from wall.

    THE LOT.

It finally worked after I did all that, but an hour in im just surfing then monitor goes off and the noise level of the PC running drops to a lower pitch.

Ive done all I can to my knowledge but cant fix it.

Are there any guesses as to what it could be?

    Thanks all

Re: Monitor goes off after about an hour

There's not a lot of info in your post.

    Desktop or laptop?
What model PC, or PSU/monitor/motherboard? How old are each?
By "no display" do you mean that the whole thing was off, or just the monitor?
If you have another PC, could you ping the dead PC from another?

By "...monitor goes off and the noise level of the PC running drops to a lower pitch." I would guess that your power supply is kaput & should not be used except on an expendable test PC. If you have to boot up your PC, remove the SATA & power cables from the hard drive to prevent data loss.

Re: Monitor goes off after about an hour

Graphics card overheating and powering off? What fans are still spinning in the computer when the monitor goes off?

I assume it isn't just the monitor going off...

Re: Monitor goes off after about an hour

The orange light on the monitor, combined with a noticeable pitch change from the PC is making me think GPU. most likely overheating, try whacking the fan up and watching the temps.

After it turns off, can you press the power button again(on the monitor), if it goes green and gives you a no signal message, then almost certainly GPU.

Might be worth checking your error logs, sounds like the PC is still running in some form after the crash, so should be something in there that might point you in a general direction.

Re: Monitor goes off after about an hour

All fans are spinning and when touching gfx card plate its nearly untouchable. Is that normal?

The monintor when i turn off and on goes straight to orange. The monitor (2405FPW dell) did have a thick green line going vertical for a long time. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?

What temperature is your graphics card running at, under load and idle?

Sounds like the monitors ok then, iirc that's the default no signal message. Really sounds like overheating/dying card.
