    Horrible noise from pc...

Right so my screen just randomly flicked off then on. After this the tower started to make a high pitched noise which i can only explain as a hissing sound, it done this hissing for a good minute, then the screen flicked black again and it stoped.

points to note! i have a brand new lcd on the pc, drivers for gpu have recently been updated

please tell me that my card is not on its way out

    It's a evga gtx 260 SSC edition

When you built it, did you put an owl and a snake in there?

I'm thinking it could be that, they've just had an argument

    Capacitor whine ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

<grabs thread and hauls it firmly back on topic> (because this is a technical section where members generally help each other out with useful posts)

It could also be the power supply or the graphics card. As for the noise - could be a capacitor on the way out, or an inductor in the PSU singing' or possibly a fan failure causing overheating. Well worth taking the side of the computer off and giving it a good inspection, or see if you can localise where the noise is coming from.

    Re: Horrible noise from pc...

A hissing noise on an LCD monitor often indicates that the inverter is broken. I fixed my sister's LCD which was doing the same thing, by replacing failed capacitors on the inverter's power supply.

If you open up the monitor, you might perhaps find some bulging or leaking capacitors.

    Re: Horrible noise from pc...

    Thanks peterb,

Im going to pull the pc apart ina min when my daughter goes home, just hoping it isnt anything to bad! although i'm thinking it may be a cap on the GPU as that is the oldest part in the system, lucky for me it has a lifetime warranty

will come back with my results in the next few hours...

    Re: Horrible noise from pc...

I'd go for PeterB's suggestion (seeing as it's not humour related ;-)).

I've supported users when peculiar noises have been sorted by simply moving the tower (turned out a cable was catching on the fan and making a worrying sound)... in fact, have you checked your fans?

Nope, ive yet to have it happen again so it's pretty hard to try and figure what was causing it.

    Re: Horrible noise from pc...

My studio PC makes hissing noises under load. I thought it was the HDD or the USB stick RAID (poor man's SSD), but I replaced them both and no difference.
