PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
HELLO THERE!!! Block of gorgonzola to whoever helps me fix my problem.
taken this from another forum, as dont seem to be gettin any replies, heres got lots of peeps watching!
Im doing up an old PC from my garage to sell to someone (already late waiting for a dam cable) but my monitors are saying "no signal", or "video mode not supported" AFTER the compaq logo appears... NO BEEPS.
I'm trying to connect using a blue 15 pin Dsub cable i got off off ebay (turned up damaged, so may be the problem - one pin was a little bent and the outside casing so I bent it back with some needle pliers).
>system seems to power on fine, but no POST beeps, unless I take out all the memory
>computer NEVER used to use the blue d-sub/VGA before, in fact it had a plater covering it saying "Do Not Use" - presumably because the PC had a DVI port - it used dvi from a 7800gt gfx card which has now gone.
>I have installed someone elses hard drive into the case, as well as a sound card AND a cd drive
>power light comes on PSU when plugged in, and everything seems like its powered up, cd drive works
>Tried it on my 17" lcd - "no signal" tried it on my 1080p tv - "signal not supported"
>ON MY TV THE COMPAQ NAME DOES SHOW BRIEFLY, AND THE LINES OF WRITING ARE VERY CHOPPY AND FUZZY, like a fuzzy kind of v sync tearing, then changes to "video mode not supported".
>Ive tried taking the cmos chip out for few mins
Its a compaq presario sr1000 product - sr1639uk
Was using XP, and new hdd put in has XP also
This was working 1 month ago, do you think this cable i have could be causing the problem?? It LOOKS ok now ive fixed it, seems to screw in the the mobo and my LCD's ok. Cables are usually fine, im gonna order another though as i had to wait a WEEK for this one.
THANKS IN ADVANCE
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
maybe ill try it now on another screen, i think it might be that cable ya know- fuzzyness is odd dont you think?
I also now have only one stick of memory in there.
I tried taking the cmos chip out for about 1 minute, should i wait longer? also theres a jumper here named jcmos1, shall i try moving that??
EDIT > so right, the only thing ive got plugged into the mobo is the P4 power connecter, 20pin power connecter, 2 fans, 1 stick of ram (tried in different slots).
There is also loads of usb plugs in there, and some cables for a card reader Shall i take those out too?
STILL THE SAME DAM FUZZY SCREEN!?!? Although this time i did see a little more before it went blank - didnt have nuff time to read it. Is there any CHANCE it could be the cable?
If the speaker is not beeping does this DEFINITELY 100% mean there is a fault with mobo? Would not having the right cable plugged in or no pci-e card plugged in change anything with POST tests?
Trying on another monitor now (a 4th one with an attached d-sub cable). Also have another compaq down the other end of house, hoping its a PCI-ex GPU in there so i can try that.
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
UPDATE > I have tried the PC next to a very similar compaq I had lying around and found out
1) These PCs DO NOT seem to beep once to confirm a succesfull post, rules that out
2) I tried with the other PCs monitor, and this time it DOES display on the monitor "Disk OS failure, press enter to load..... (or something like that, im sure you've seen it before), which is good
3) These PCs seem to NOT like booting from the mobo D-Sub or without a GPU - I tried on BOTH PCs to change the primary display from PCI/AGP to ONBOARD, and run from the mobos D-SUB, and no change in the pc we are talking about, and the other PC showed no display at all.
-----------------------
SO - New problem = Pc is posting, but the writing on screen is very fuzzy, like its being re-processed and displayed in a slightly different place.
-----------------------
Do you think that starting it up with another version of XP on the HDD would have really screwed with the drivers??? Would a driver issue have caused the screen to go all fuzzy?? I might try re-installing windows if thats the case, see if i still get the same issue, then look for years for drivers.
Sigh, there shall be cake at the end of this.
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
If the mobo has built in graphics and you are also using an exte4rnal card, there may be a bios setting to determine which card the computer should use. Of course, you have to be connected to the correct output to see it. The default will be the internal card, and if you have reset the CMOS you will have reverted to the default settings.
Resetting the CMOS may (depending on the BIOS) have reset the hard drive settings, so if the BIOS doesn't support auto discovery, you may have to set that up manually.
If you are fault finding - unplug everything apart from one stick of ram and the GPU/graphics card to check the system posts. Set up the hard drive and see if the system boots. If so, start adding back the devices until you get a working system.
You need to be logical and methodical in fault finding. And if you have a spare PSU, it would be worth checking the system with that too.
And that cable definitely sounds iffy.

>>>no as ive said it used to, and ive tried telling it to use onboard graphics instead - still fuzzy get text. On the other compaq i had available, i changed it to use onboard intead of the installed agp, and NOTHING whatsoever comes out the mobo. They must have some kind of factory setting to disable the mobo d-sub? or physically disable it?

>>> im not having an issue with hdds... yet

>>> again not the problem, ive removed everything but the cpu - same prob

>>> I should hope i am, lol, ive tried removing everything but the kitchen sink it seems. System is powering on and down fine, but i shall try anyway thank you.
At least now i can get to the bios, quite hard to read it though. So what do we think then? GPU issue, CPu problems, or awkward Mobo???
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
I think it's the onoboard VGA on the motherboard thats at fault here. You said it hada lable on it saying do not use and it did have a 7800 GFX card in there. I suspect thats why it had a do not use sticker on it in all fairness.
Personally I'd get hold of a dirt cheap GFX card, it's only running an AGP port (I've got one of these system aswell as a spare PC) get something like a GeForce FX 5200/6200 if all it's going to be used for is some very basic stuff.
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
yeah its just to get it up and running, i could use it for fault testing then as well. I need at least 1 agp card and one pci i suppose.
Where can i get em from dirt cheap? people seem to be spending crazy money for old cards atm on flee bay, wierd you can get brand new GFX cards on here for like £25

You haven't been a member here long enough (or have a high enough post count) to get access to the Forsale and wanted section.
The only thing I could suggest would maybe check out a few local independent PC stores down your way. I'm sure they'll have something cheap and cheerful enough for the job in hand.
Re: PLEASE Help!! No video output, maybe no post??
imfortunately not..... people by me were selling (and i mean actauully selling (I saw someone pay and walk out) £110 for a 9600gt.... they had an atu 4850 in there for £110 too - same price i bought mine at 2 years ago. As for his used stuff, well it was even worse.
he had a 6600gt (I think), that was...
>not guaranteed working
>no refunds/no returns
>had no box, cables, drivers etc
>scratched (cosmetic)
guess how much he wanted?? £5 you say?? £15?? for a card that might not even work remember??........ £70!! :O
i was like "dont you think thts a little steep? "
- he looked at me funny, and said well this is very new technologies you know, runs on the advanced PCI express socket it does, even comes with loads of its own memory (...128mb?)....."
I said ok mate, good luck with the business (sarcasticly), and left. dam, people like tht piss me off, ripping off everyday and making a living from it. I hate it.:stupid::whip:
