Re: Raid storage and backup advice needed

If you have a RAID1 storage array you wouldnt need to copy it twice though, you would essentially have 2 copies of the same thing on two seperate hards drives encased within the enclosure. If you got a hot swappable enclosure you could even take one out and wrap it in 5 tonnes of bubblewrap for the journey back if your really uncomfortable with it.

HD-SDI is a direct digital video link so it cant be used in the same way. I suggested this as it removes the need for P2 cards alltogether. With a cheapo decklink and whatever editing software you have access too you could have a constant stream of uncompressed video (obviously you could compress it on the cards processing).

Oh yes - your's is certainly a more elegant solution, I costed up mine just to see how it stacked up budget wise. . It is cheaper, but more labour/process intensive anjd basically just speeds up the process currently used.

You could dispense with the second external caddy and use the laptop as one of the two copies (which is what is happening now if I understand the OP correctly) until it is uploaded to the main storage repository, which would speed up and simplify things a bit further.

I've been looking at the eSata express card adapters. If they are quick enough then that might be a good solution. As you say it's not very elegant and there would still be a bottleneck from the P2 cards to the computer. But I can live with it being a bit of a muddle, so much of my job is anyway. If it makes the process quicker then that may be good enough. It would certainly be an improvement.

The HD-SDI option would be more elegant but I think it requires too much additional equipment. We'd need a new computer, the Decklink and large hard drives. Plus the director wants to be able to view the material on a monitor. We're shooting against a green screen and need to be able to see a rough composite against the final background. So I'm not sure if we'd have to split the HD-SDI signal to a mixer desk.

Thanks once again for your thoughts.

The decklink does have an output which can be configured as an loop using pretty much any half decent editing software.
