True. If it's only a minute amount that you're worried about then that's probably the better option.
Either way, I suspect it won't work so I wouldn't get too concerned over the details.
Maybe I'm oversuspicious, but that post smells like something to me.
Really? Honestly?data_recoverycanada @ mail2world dot com
Someone is capable of recovering a bust hard drive, but isn't capable of getting their own domain name? And their company name is Data Recovery Canada?
I don't buy it myself, especially considering it was a single-issue poster.
Assuming that is genuine, its not that bad! But I'm a cheapskate and my data's not worth that much to be honest. Just hopig the freezer method works!
Yeah, the few files i really want are only about 50mb, its just that at leas one fo them is saved on my desktop in Vista.... as the O/S was password protected, is there any way to copy it from the desktop by browsing through the files?
I've downloaded the puppy arcade and am creating the boot usb stick - I've never used Linux so I'll have to have a play before i plug the hard disk in! Any tips?
On a slightly different note, can anyone reccommend a new 2.5" HDD??!!
Ideall i want something about 500Gb, if its not too expensive. and something reliable...!! :-) not fussed about SSD as I've not got the cash!
Edit:
what about this Momentus XT - seems to be quite good?!

The freezer trickcan work for certain failure modes. If the motor spindle bearing have dried out, freezing make unstick them for a short time. Same with the head arm bearings.
Your need to wrap the drive in an antistatic bag, excluding as much air as possible and if you can, some silica gel sachets). This helps prevent condensation Then wrap that in a ziplock type of plastic freezer bag - again exclude as much air as you can.
Freeze it.
When you come to get it out, work quickly - make sure everything is good to go before you start.
Take the drive ot o the zip bag. If you pack the drive in the antistatic bag with the connectors at the end, do that, then remove the drive and start it up - crossing your fingers. If it starts, work quickly to recover the data using a strategy you have previously determoines, using your pre-determined fallback strategy if that fails.
Opening the drive really is last resort. The platter/head gap is extremely small, of asimilar order of magnitude to the diameter of a smoke particle, and if that breaks the laminar air flow that keeps the head floating - it will crash catastrophically.

The previous user account password won't present a problem in itself - if you were booting into a Windows system you might still have an issue with ownership and access rights, but a Linux live CD should bypass any NTFS permissions. Assuming the freezer trick works, of course (unlikely IMHO).
If the data was actually NTFS-encrypted, then you're shafted no matter what you do, but I don't suppose this was the case (I guess you'd remember doing it if so).![]()
Cheers for the help - it wasn't encrypted!
Anyway, I just took it out of the freezer and gave it a go following peterb's instructions.... it sounded like it got further in terms of spinning up, but it still doesn't work!!!
Gonna have a got at opening it up, but not holding out any hope now! Cheers for all your help so far!
Any thoughts on this replacement HDD: Momentus XT 500GB?
OK, so I'm not sure what I thought i was going to do once i opened it up, but its open now!!
What appears to hapen is the platters spin up and the head moves across the platters then flicks back to the 'parked' position. Then the platters slow and it starts all over again. I'll try and upload a video and link to it.
Edit: Link to HDD video
Any ideas if there is any way to fix this, or am i simply flogging a dead horse?!!

Ah Never Mind - its was worth a shot!
I ended up ordering a Seagate Momentus 500GB ST9500420ASG from ebuyer as the replacement. Hopefully it will be OK!
Cheers for all the help!
i opened up my hdd i wanted to fix got it open thought to myself i am not going to be able to
do anything and put it back together. I finally fixed it by swapping the logic board and it worked
fine even after opening/ still works to this day and that was like 8 years ago
Do Do Not risk the Freezer if you need the data.
The chances of it doing your drive any good are so low as to be a significant risk.
Don't get me wrong if you are successful great, but more likely the risk of condensation on the platters will mean that your data could be further corrupted.
Get an opinion from a reputable data recovery lab, there are many who offer free clean room diagnosis providing you have not damaged the drive or opened the cover.
