    4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

    I recently upgraded my pc and purchased an overclocked bundle. Intel Core i5-760 Socket 1156 Quad-Core (overclocked @4ghz) + Asus P7P55D-E + Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 PC3 12800 1600MHz + Contac 29 CPU Cooler from Yoyotech.

After installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 64bit. I've noticed that in the properties on my computer, it indicates that I have 4gb memory installed and in brackets 2gb usable.

I've also noticed that in the bios under system information it also indicates 2048mb usable.

Why is this? Where is the missing 2gb? Why is the bios only showing 2gb?

I have tried swapping the sticks (still the same), I have tested each stick individually (both are ok).

Any ideas what could be causing this and how to resolve this.

    Many thanks

Re: 4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

I had exactly the same problem just the other week, I notched down the memory multiplier (which is linked to the base clock) so the memory ran a bit slower but all 4GB show up. However, this shouldn't really happen given that it was bought as an overclock bundle but it's worth a try I suppose.

Re: 4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

Not so familiar with the P55 mobo but on the X58 I had to enable XMP profile or manually set memory SPD and up the QPI and DDR voltage to enable full memory on a couple of systems I built including my own as the default bios settings did not run the memory at 16000Mhz and on occasion only enabled 4GB of 6GB (or 8 of 12GB) on some other machines I built)

I could do that, but that would void my warranty if I played around with the overclock settings in the bios.

Re: 4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

setting the dram voltage and the qpi to the proper settings supported by the memory is not overclocking you just need to do more reading on forums that are specific to the mobo or memory manufacterers, theres bound to be people running similar setups who have gone thru the same pain

Re: 4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

Is the memory remap feature enabled in the BIOS?

I'm not familiar with that board, but from a quick look at the manual it will be in the Advanced menu under "Uncore Configuration".

    Done that, again nothing.

I will try the forums and try googling even further.

Re: 4GB installed Memory 2GB usable

Using latest bios for your motherboard?
Suggest full reset by resetting the cmos switch or removing the battery
    Reseat memory
    Reseat cpu
Make sure memory remap is enabled
If none of those work then probably problem with your windows install

Might be an obvious question, but is some memory allocated to onboard graphics?

I have checked the bios and yes I am using the latest bios version.I have reseated the memory and cpu. memory remap is enabled and I have re-installed window 3 times.
I might try reseting the cmos switch and remove the battery later tonight.

Not in this case as I have an Asus Nvidia GTX470, it has already around 1280mb on board.

Real strange one, i would check cpu socket maybe some pins are slightly bent. Tried other dimm slots too?

I would assume that the cpu socket is ok, after all Yoyotech built and tested the bundle before I purchased it.

I have tried other dimm slots. I've tried slot A1+B1 and that works fine but only showing around 3.5 usable memory. I've tried slots B1+B2 and the system doesn't boot up.
