    Issue with new cpu temps?

    Evening all.

Up watching England win the Ashes, get in!, and decided to test my new cpu, installed tonight.

Temps first I thought. Noticed difference on core 1 to the other 3. Is this normal on a Intel quad? Me first one you see, so not sure and the net was inconclusive. Akasa fan with copper pipes, decent case cooling now too. At stock as I've just got it. Any comment appreciated.

Re: Issue with new cpu temps?

Sorry for underwhelming folk with the above question.

Still can't get an answer on the net though so a second appeal needed, as every other forum clearly doesn't have the experience/knowledge looking through the temp threads at too many conflicting answers.

My concern is the first core running at 7-10 degrees higher than the other three. As it's new I have not tried a mild o/c yet and am a tad concerned about trying with that temp variation. Also aware my mobo is not a great clocker and the FSB speed on these Q8400's doesn't lend itself to a big clock at all.

Am I being a wuss here guys?

Don't think there's reason to worry, the sensors aren't the most trustworthy things to, well, um.. trust.

As to overclocking - you'll never know until you try it out. Yes, the conditions aren't very favourable, but you will get something out of that combo Just keep checking the temperatures when loaded (with OCCT, Prime95, y-cruncher) and all should be fine.

Re: Issue with new cpu temps?

Thanks Queelis. Just seemed odd one core was 10 degrees higher than the others.

Have put an Akasa fan on with copper pipes as well so will try a little clock and stress it to check.

Re: Issue with new cpu temps?

    i have a q6600 at 3.0ghz.
one of the cores always runs hotter than the others, iirc its core 4.
i have used coretemp, realtemp, and hwmonitor, and i get different temps on all these programs lol, but core 4 is always the hottest, by at least 8.C
    i wouldn't worry about it.

edit. your motherboard temp does seem a bit high. mine is around 25.C and yours is 40.C
i am not familiar with your case, but try taking the side off and then check the temps, or mod a couple of fans in your case

Re: Issue with new cpu temps?

Thanks for that jcol. Makes me feel reassured.

The mobo temp is the winbond thing reporting the cpu temp as the mobo temp. Apparently not uncommon at all.

Re: Issue with new cpu temps?

Just a little follow up here good people.

Have indeed popped a mild clock on, the mobo reckons in it's ad blurb the FSB will o/c to 1600. So thought about it and set my RAM to 667 not 800. Now the RAM and FSB are 1:1.

Running quite happily at 3.12 Ghz with no temp difference with no load, and 1-2 degrees in Memtest. Passed Memtest too, well 12 hours at it.

Not pushed it to a FSB of 400, leaving headroom seems a good idea on longevity.
