Question PC Boots as soon as plug is connected, then dies 3 seconds later...

    Hey guys,

I turned my computer off at the wall before I went home for Christmas, when I came back I went to turn it back on but as soon as I flicked the switch on the wall the PC started up... then died 3 seconds later.

Then after about 8 seconds it would turn itself back on... then die, then keep looping.

I've had a couple of times where it's managed to get to the POST, but only once where it's been on long enough for the screen to turn on (LCD takes a while)...

First thoughts are that the power supply is on the blink - it's a 520w corsair modular job, but I was running 2x4870s which was probably testing it somewhat. I tried taking out one of the cards but it has made no difference.

So. Does everyone recommend I shell out on a new PSU (ie: this 750w one).

I'm thinking of replacing the 4870s with 6870s which will pull less power, but probably good to have some headroom...

What I'm not keen on doing is shelling out a ton on something which may not sort out the issue

    Thoughts?

PS - Spec as per the 'My System' bit on the left.

I would suspect either the PSU, motherboard or case switch may be at fault. To eliminate the switch, unplug it from the motherboard then plug in the PC and see what happens. If it stays off, short the two switch pins with a screwdriver - this will boot the PC under normal circumstances. If this makes no difference, the easiest way to eliminate the other two components would be to just try a PSU from another PC if possible.

SImilar thing happened to my PC and it was a the heatsink which wasn't alligned and therefore the CPU was overheating. Once the BIOS detected the temp above threshold it shutdown PC (few seconds upon boot).

I don't think the CPU would cause something like this - the OP says the PC is switching on as soon as power reaches the PSU, without pressing the power button.

Nothing has changed with the PC over Christmas other than turning it off at the plug, I think I'll just go down the new PSU route and cross my fingers... it's gonna be 3 weeks before I'll be able to do it but I'll report back - hopefully from the working pc

There's a good chance it could be the latching circuit on the motherboard though, I would strongly recommend testing with another PSU before spending money on one you might not need.

Turns out it's not even that complicated... turns out the physical switch is shorted so I've taken it off and just used a screwdriver to turn the PC on...

So now I'm after a push-to-make switch so that I can replace the original one in my case... ebay time!

Guess there's enough watts in there after all!

Yeah I thought it might be that. Goes to show you shouldn't rush out and buy new hardware without figuring out exactly what the problem is. Glad you got it sorted.
