    abit is7 e2 post problems

had this pc given to me today o what fun it is to be fixed but there is something wrong somewhere as i cant get it to post most of the time and i don't get any beep.

it has that mobo p4 cpu 2gb of ram agp gfx card two ide hdd and two dvds 350w psu

now at first it would not even tun on but after a couple of goes and making sure all the psu connectors where in all the way i got it to power up and all fans spinning but nothing on the monitor.

tested the agp card in another machine and it works fine so i put it back in and power it up again and i got the first part of the post screen where it says press tab or del pressed del to get to the bios and it just froze so shut it down.

checked mobo caps and all seem to be OK so i disconnect the power for the two hdd and try again and got to the post screen this time and had the beep when it started up.

powered down and connected the two hdd back up and nothing again no beep no post but the drives are spining.

disconnected the two hdd again and now it wont post or beep again it just powers up and thats it.

disconnected all the hdd and DVD drives power and tried again but got nothing no post no beep.

i could try a working psu but have a funny feeling this mobo is about to die.

I think myself that the mobo has given up to be fair, you might coax some life into it, but for how long before it goes again ?

I had a load of socket A gear given to me last month, most of it was working till I stripped it all out of the various cases it was supplied in and then it all just died.

Re: abit is7 e2 post problems

pulled the psu out of this thing and the case fans only to find the rear exhaust fan wire was broken from the connector and touching the inside of the case.

then found a connector stashed away under the dvd drives with electrical tape round it, guess it was for a fan at some in time and the bear ends of the pos and neg were taped together.

and to top that the firewire header from the case was plugged in to the usb header on the mobo

Re: abit is7 e2 post problems

rebuilt this thing and put a new psu and its now working and booting in to win 7.

after about an hour it restarted and started making a continuous beeping sound like a police car so i shut it down.

now the CPU heat sink is not that hot but the north bridge heat sink is very warm to the touch, could this be over heating? and making it do this.

ill let it cool down and install speed fan to see what the temps are.

Re: abit is7 e2 post problems

fired it up again and went straight to the bios where the cpu was at 75c and the limit was set to 85c.

is this normal for this cpu its a p4 3.00GHz dual core, the heat sink is stock and it clips on with plastic clips.

only went for a few minutes this time as the bios froze and had to shut it down.

touched the nb heat sink and its red hot now

Re: abit is7 e2 post problems

I'd reset the cmos and see if that helps. Maybe a voltage or two have been set too high in the bios. If it still gets toasty, try reseating it with a fresh application of thermal goop.

i done that at the start and also removed the heat sink to find no thermal paste so had to put some on.

think its been like this for years and when the rear exhaust fan failed its gone in to slow roast.

I think myself that the mobo has given up to be fair, you might coax some life into it, but for how long before it goes again ?
yup mobo now dead went for about 30-50 mins then restarted sounding like a police car looks like the nb chip has overheated even with a fan over it as i thought it might do that.

now that's 6 abit boards gone in the same sort of way over the years.

had a look on eBay for an abit replacement mobo and there ain't one, i wonder why.

Re: abit is7 e2 post problems

not sure why my first two died they were working fine the night before and the next day i turned them on all the lights were on but no one was at home.

last one i had decided to melt the main power connector in to the mobo and blew up the psu with it.
