    Picking a decent photo printer

As per title really, have never understood buying a exspensive printer (owned a epson stylus r240 before which kicked butt....and got it for free XD) Anyway my printer failed on me, spare a moment to remember it.......man i miss that thing! it produced such beautiful prints, now i replaced it with a canon ip2600...what a mistake that was!

Printing on it is pretty dull, not nice prints at all, this is btw high gloss kodak photo paper i use with the orginal ink, so deffinatly not down to cheap inks/paper so dont even suggest it!

To add to that the printer seemed to leave a band of grip lines across the photo, granted they was faint but i could notice them, i knew they was there and the light enhanced them, over time some of the grip lines went away but stll there was some left.

So i ask, is a canon pixma ip4600 any good? it has pretty darn good reviews but has anyone hear got one that can confirm its a worthy purchase for decent photo printing? how long does ink last, does it leave grip lines? is there others in the sub £100 range that i should consider? please please please remember i've not a clue about printers!

    Thanks, any help is appreciated

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

Do you want the printer for just printing photos? or for text etc aswell? What size do you want to print up to?

I have had several printers in the past, each with their own qualities and disappointments. My old Epson 950 printed very good results although always need tweaking for decent prints. It did print better on epson inks, but it took 7 and they were nearly a tenner each and not very big

I have decided now to go down a different route - get a half decent mfp which prints photos well enough for friend's and family shots etc. To be fair the hp photosmart printer I have prints photos pretty well. Anything I want to print to display, I use printing companies. The cost of the proper inks, paper etc did just not warrant printing at home.

This is just for me personally of course - however I do miss the convenience of being able to print high quality prints at home, and to experiment with different colours/contrasts etc.

Back to your post, I have heard good things about the canon too - but have no experience of one, sorry.

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

A lot depends on how important photo quality is to you. If you're a keen amateur and it's very important, and you won't be doing anything much else on it, one route might be suggested. And you might be better off with this thread in the photo section.

If, on the other hand, you want a decent, all-round machine producing photos that are "good" to a non-enthusiast, another approach might be better.

What I would say is that photo printers for those that are fussy about their photo results don't come especially cheap, and that has 'bells on' if you want wide carriage (A3, or God help you, bigger still).

For the true photo enthusiast, £100 might be struggling, especially if you're looking to compete with that R240, which was pretty damn good. One option might be to hunt down a suitable R280 on eBay. Obviously, you DO need to be careful, but you'll often find enthusiasts upgrading because they want A3.

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

For that sort of money (unless you can get 2nd hand) I would get an ultra budget printer for quick print jobs and send anything of quality to online firms for print out.

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

Yes the prints were beautiful that came out of it, but as long as i get one that does just as good a job, im going to be a happy chappy. Im not an really into it but i do pay close attention to detail so notice bad tones or grip lines and so on. this canon i have for instance has bad tones, not very rich at all and the black isnt very deep at all in colour, abit anoying really!

ive been eyeing up the stylus r series on ebay. would i be right in thinking that anything above the r240 would be as good or better?

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

The Epson R800 is an excellent printer as was the HP 8750. However, remember that the inks won't be cheap though.

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

hm....thats just the thing, my r240 only cost £10 to refill, and about £3 on cheap ink (didnt like it much mind) so something ive thought about, anyhow im stuck as i can get them so cheap, but would a newer canon (cheaper ink if im right aswell) be a better bet for me? as long as it has a decent colour depth and is badly plain in colour i will be happy, of course grip lines drive me insane.

To add, is a Epson Stylus S22 something worth looking at?

Re: Picking a decent photo printer

    I meant R800! Doh!

The cheap ink tends to fade quicker than the original ink so for photo printing I would avoid it TBH.

stick with the crappy canon if your going to use none genuine inks.
