Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Think I posted this in the wrong forum before so apologies for the double-post.

I have just built a new maching and have added a second hard drive but the BIOS/OS won't see it at all! I've tried every SATA socket and am at a loss. I'm sure it's something stupid I've missed but does anyone have any ideas?

The MOBO is the GA-880GMA-UD2H and the drive I'm trying to get to work is a Samsung HD103SJ

    Thanks again.

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

It won't normally show unless you partition and format it and assign drive letter in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management?

Haven't bought a newer drive since I don't know when so not sure, but do they still use Master\Slave jumpers on the back, that also might be a reason

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

If it's not showing in Windows or Bios I'd edge my bets on the fact that controller board on the hard drive itself is to blame.

However what Cat stated also carried alot of weight

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

This is probably a bit of an obvious thing to check, so you probably have already done so, but have you confirmed that the second hard drive is working in another computer? Does it spin up?

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Thank you for the replies so far...

The hard drive is fine in all other computers, it came out of one and went straight into this new one and has since been put back in the one it came from. I've installed the patch and still no joy yet another F3 I have as my main OS drive works fine in there. Very bizarre

Might be a long shot but have you tried it with another sata cable

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Hmmm...just realised I used the same motherboard in a recent build, with the same hard drive! No problems here as yet.

Again, obvious point, but have you got the latest BIOS?

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Right I've got some more info on this, hopefully it helps?

If I just plug power into the drive, it spins up on boot, however with power and the SATA data cable plugged in, nothing!

Has anyone heard of this before?

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Leggies point about the SATA cable is a good one. On a build last week I had to go to the third cable before the disk showed. Cue an hour of 'what ARE the chances of that etc.'

Would a duff controller on the disk stop it spinning up I wonder? I'm sure your last bit of info has a clue there. The fact it works suggest a conflict with the new board somewhere. [cat's point?]

And a last thought, have you tested any other hard drives in the board to verify the SATA sockets on the board. Now I know the chances of all the sockets being duff are slim....I'm just clutching at straws on your behalf.

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Thanks The Fish and by all means - clutch away!

The main OS hard drive is also an F3 (though a different model and brand new) and is working away happily, as is the SATA DVD drive. The drive in question works absolutely fine when put back in the other machine, I've tested all of the ports and with 3 different cables...

Looks like a new drive is needed but where to get one on the high street without paying a disgraceful amount of money?!

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

It was cub1061 who suggested a switch of cables.

Well, if we're into clutching-at-straws territory, has your PSU got enough power for both hard drives? I presume you're using a new PSU, since it's a new build; just thought it might be worth checking, if you've reused an old PSU instead.

I'll try and check the build I put together later, and see if any disk errors are showing up in Event Viewer. Might yield a clue.

Oh - one last thing - your SATA sockets aren't set in your BIOS to use RAID or anything, are they?

Oops, apologies to cub1061. Yet another lesson in the perils of beer and late night forum watching!

And obviously buy a hard drive from Scan not the high street and save those beer tokens. be interesting to see if a new one does it. I think Leggie is your man here as he is using the same components in question.

    Good luck!

Re: Motherboard won't see new hard drive

Just a quick update. I checked the similar system here and there were indeed a few disk errors showing up in Event Viewer from a few days ago. Not sure what firmware the drive is using but will check and try updating. Are you seeing any controller errors in your Event Viewer?
