PC changing its ip address on the network

The home pc used to have .4 as it last IP number, but today it jumped to .38 (as my xbox was .37 last night). I then turned the home pc off, and back on 5 min last for it now be .2

Is there anything that could explain why it is doing that??/ It was always stable at .4 which never changed.

Thats DHCP for you the D stands for Dynamic !

What is allocating addresses? Is it your router? It may have a very short lease timeout. Most routers will let you reserve IP addresses by entering the MAC address of the card against an IP (if you do want to fix the IP)

The router has renewed the lease before and the .4 has stayed. Are you saying it was at the end of the time it could renew that address, and is now changing at least until the pc stays on for a period where it will stick with one address?

even with one device on the network its conceivable that a new IP can be allocated if the lease expired for long enough.

if you have to reference everything by IP then either reserve or go static.

i use address reservation on my router to give the same mac addy the same ip, see if you have the option under the routers lan settings ?

I think it has been off for two days which may explain it, but then again it was off for a week and never changed. Think i'm just being paranoid!!

No the belkin router I have does not give that option. Its just odd that after two days being off it now changes, when as I said its been off for a week before and nothign changed. The other odd thing is that when it was turned on this morning it was .4, and then during the time it was on it changed to.36

maybe the options hidden away ?

failing that you could set a fixed ip, trouble is you may need to do it on all connected devices as it could cause a conflict, thats why i use reservation to stop any problems (and allow me to RDP in to the various PC's)

I won't mess around with that for now. Just confused as to why when it started up the last digit was 4 , and then it changed to 36 (think the pc was still on when it changed) Just so long its not a virus or anything like that ,i'll be happy.

i would check the event viewer, may show a network error renewing, hence a new ip.

Checked event viewer nothing out of the norm. The pc was on last night so rules out it being off for ages as the cause. Just booted it up to print an excel doc off, and its now .2 when it was .4 about an hour ago.
