Hard drive just died on me.
:surprised:Was just in the middle of listing an item on ebay when I had to go and bath the kids, left the pc, on returning system felt very slow and didn't want to respond.
I shut down and try to reboot, thats when I started to hear a clicking sound from the HD and window would not boot. Try repairing with the installation disc but that hang aswell.
Does the clicking sound from the HD mean thats is dead?:censored:
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
dead or dying, you may get it running when its cooled down but just use it to backup vital info. it wont last.
sometimes turning it on its side or upside down may keep it running a little longer but do not rely on it.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
Thanks, thats a good point, it was flat in my last case now it on its side.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
I've had two drives let go on me this week and I've no spares either.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
Put the drive flat again but nothing. Just making the clicking sound and it doesn't even make it to the wondow flash screen. Worse thing is I only scanned it last week and it was fine, my spare drive had errors but only use as spare anyway.
Well, lets hope my wife don't find out but I been looking at getting a SSD drive so if Scan are monitoring the forum. Stick some SSD on your Today Only section for the weekend.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
i hope my samsungs make it through a possible 100 hour rebuild to add a 5th drive to the array :|
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
Both my drives are Samsung, I have only ever own samsung drives. This is the first time 1 has died on me. I still have a 20gig ide drive which is nearly 10 years old and still working
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
The curtains have now closed, my hard drive has left the building.:wallbash:

That's gotta be painful to wait for!
@cub: HDDs die, it's just something that happens. People have a drive from brand A die on them and never use them again for that reason. That's just daft IMO, it's not if but when with ANY MFR. And all do good and bad batches. But that's why we back up, if your data doesn't exist in 3 places, it doesn't exist at all. If you have data in only one location you must be prepared to lose it.
By the sounds of it you had everything backed up and/or didn't lose anything important. I hope so anyway. :)

yep, everything is backed up on spare drive and portable drive. My life would not be worth living if I lose all the photos.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
1. Check warranty on Samsung site and get it replaced if its in warranty.
2. If you need files, Put the Hard drive in a sealed bag ( like a sandwich bag ) and put it in the freezer overnight. Next morning, take out the drive and connect it up and copy files off.

Gotta try that! If you do cub, please let us know if that works. :)
OilSheikh...love the moniker. As prices approach 1.50 a litre in six weeks so very apt....

Just put HD is freezer, will feed back this evening when I take it back out.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
Thanks cub. Fingers crossed for you feller. And keen to see if that works....
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
It sat in the freezer for 7 hours, took it out and...........nothing. It didn't work, bios still sees it but unable to boot as main drive or second drive.
It was a good drive while it lasted, all good things must come to an end.
Re: Hard drive just died on me.
Might of known lol. They do indeed snuff it mate. But look on the positive side. It makes you understand you haven't backed it up until its backed up x 3.
'Hard drives don't die, they make you learn lessons'.
Made me learn anyway lol.
