Memory install help.

Hey folks, I need some help getting some memory to work.

I have: 2 x 2gb of ocz pc2-8000 5.5.5.15 @2.1v / q9550@ 3.7ghz (435fsb @ 8.5multi.) 1.21volts. Asus p5q pro turbo.

So I decided to buy another 4gb of the exaxt same ram from Ebay, put both in and the pc posts fine, but once it got to the windows starting logo screen it goes black and just stays there have to reset. Have tried changing the overclock setting lower - nothing, tried changing the memory lower and then a bit higher - nothing.

So took out the 4gb and booted with original setting, its fine again.

Am now currently running with the 2 new sticks in slots 2 and 4 with my old ram out of their slots, so I know the memory is working fine.

I am a bit stumped, I can only assume some setting doesn`t like me just putting in another 4gb but don`t know what, so if anyone can shed some light i`d be very appreciative.

what if the memory settings are put to default ?

Memory settings are at default, I don`t know enough about timings and such to play with them, 5.5.5.15 are the default timings and 2.1v default memory volts.

Does bios see all 4 sticks of ram

Not sure, the screen goes by so quick I don`t have a chance to notice anything on it, can you slow it down or pause it so you can get a better view?

I think there are boot setting in bios which you can adjust, disable quick boot.
On my asus board if i press Tab on start up will display the boot screen with all the writing

Ok, shows 8192mb with all 4 sticks in, as it should. Go back to 4 and 4096mb. So it is recognising the memory just not booting up windows with it all in place.

will it boot into safe mode ?

Haven`t tried that yet, never booted into safe mode before. What do you hit to get there?

Also been having a search on dear old google and seems like extra voltage to the nb and ram itself can help. nb is at 1.3volts currently, how much higher can i go before getting to danger levels?

Scrap my noobiness on getting into safe mode, google again. F8.

barker you seem like you are where I am on clocking... fine with basics but wary as you learn tweaking RAM timings, volt tweaking etc. So please don't think I'm being funny when I say you have tried it at totally stock speeds first? Sort of silly thing I used to overlook.

i`m pretty ok with voltage tweaking, I just don`t like messing with ram timings as i don`t understand it. Not tried at totally stock levels, put my cpu back to 3.1ghz which should have been enough to take out an overclock factor issue with the ram (if it wont run it with the clock at that speed then i wont be using 8gb anyway, not worth it)

Yay, just thought i`d say thanks to all and let you know i got it working.

Upped NB to 1.36v / upped memory voltage to 2.2v / dropped my overclock to 400 x 8.5.

So now i`ll go tweak a few things and see if i can my clock back to 435 x 8.5

Scrap that, have taken them out again for the time being, got bsod`s when trying to launch games. It must be a voltage issue but I can`t be bothered to fault find at the moment.

with many motherboards/platforms if you populate all the dimm slots then you cannot run the memories at full speed.

I would check motherboard manual / compatibility list as usually they list the limitations
