Re: reinstalled windows xp....now no sound ??

Realtek drivers are pretty common. Do you know what model your mainboard or PC it is ? If so, Google which Realtek driver it needs. In fact, just google Model Name, with realtek and driver download and it will probably take you right there.

Once it is downloaded - simply run the file and follow the instructions. NB - If you have a complicated 5.1 or similar sound system you may have to fiddle with which sounds come out of which speaker.

EDIT: beaten to it. Also missed the model number...Apologies.

Re: reinstalled windows xp....now no sound ??

in fact it doesn't matter - try this link:

    ftp://ftp.download.packardbell.com/DESKTOP/

then select the appropriate iMedia year,

    select drivers

select realtek HDA driver. (I can't see just an AC97 driver mentioned even for the oldest iMedia model, so imagine this will be the one to use.)

Installing it should be easy. The driver is usually a self-extracting zip file or an exe file. Save the file to wherever you want then run it by double clicking on it. It will do the rest. You may have to restart your machine, though it will prompt you to do this if required.

The rest of the drivers for your machine are also on this site. I suggest downloading them even if you don't want to install all of them - make a copy or two on CDs for future ease should you want to reinstall again.

    Best of luck

this is what is written on my tower, and nothing else.

    Product name iMedia 1307
    Model type UTOW-SAN
    MSWHQL No SAN 984517
    PID 0474786
    P/N PB 13316901
    MIM

I have already downloaded and installed the following drivers from the dowload centre at P. Bell

(index of ftp download packard bell) they won't let me post the full url link on here)

I bought the PC in 2004/2005, so I installed the following drivers, but it still won't even recognize that I have a realtek AC97 built in card installed.....not there in device manager, and not there in control panel sounds and audio devices.....it was there before I reinstalled windows xp, and now it's gone. So no volume controls anywhere.

    Realtek HDA Driver.exe

    2005-2007

Re: reinstalled windows xp....now no sound ??

Looking through the PB site I can find only one model of iMedia that has drivers for XP ( all the others are Vista or Win 7)

The model with XP support is iMedia (PT.U09-PV.U09)

The XP audio driver for that model is this one

You may want to uninstall the audio drivers already installed before installing thiese and also check in the BIOS that Audio is enabled (frequently it can be disabled by default).

    Hope this helps?

Re: reinstalled windows xp....now no sound ??

you need to go to the old models drivers to find the XP iMedia machines - I gave the link in the previous post.

You don't need to install all the drivers on the page - they are for multiple computers. If the realtek ones aren't working, perhaps try the AC97 ones listed lower down eg the STAC97 ones. Unfortunately PB have a crap website that makes finding info on your system not a straight forward process. Dell are much better in this respect, it's a pity PB aren't as helpful.

When you say it has audio built in - do you mean onboard sound from the motherboard or as an installed PCI card? Presume the former.

If a PCI card is windows recognising the card? if not, is it showing up in BIOS? Presume so since the machine clearly posts ok.

Under the system devices option in device manager are any of the PCI listings showing errors?

Re: reinstalled windows xp....now no sound ??

someone called Buteman on another forum suggested I download a program called Vynil Deck_700

    I did.....and it works like a charm !! happy days :-)

Thanks to everybody who tried to help on this forum.....there was no way I would have come up with that solution left to my own devices...... I could have been here and soundless for weeks in the pre - internet days....

Yep.....Device Manager is showing a Vynil AC97 codec combo driver (WDM) under sound, video and game controllers now. I have turned off automatic updates in case it decides to block the new driver....thanks again for all your assistance, much appreciated.

Please turn auto updates back on. It will not affect the new driver.
