Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

adam, this is my experience of the 5850 card I have:

grey screen of death happened when I first got the card (mainly when watching tv in full screen), until drivers eventually patched it out.

Then in February the ati drivers with the new CCC showed up, and the problem started appearing again. Mainly caused when i was watching tv and also opened up a youtube video, it was instant graphics driver crash.

Supposedly its caused by power-play down-clocking when it shouldnt. Theres a big thread about it here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?...&highlight=uvd

Anyway, the only supposed fix is flashing the vbios. techpowerup has everything you need (RBE, ati winflash, and GPU-Z).

By setting UVD to full speed clocks and voltage, it did seem to solve the driver crashing when i had tv and a youtube video running at the same time. However, I also starting getting occasional BSoD's. They were ATI related BSOD's, windows was able to tell me that much.

So I decided to flash back to the original Vbios. Installed the march drivers when they came out, and tested to see if it would still crash. It happened almost straight away..... but then suddenly stopped. The last time I had the ATI driver crash was a full week ago.

I was completely error free until last night, when my computer froze up completely, doing nothing intensive at all. Im just kinda hoping that was a once off too.

You could argue I should go back to late 2010 drivers, and if I get more problems I probably will.

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

Its been 5 days since I flashed my graphics card. So far no crashes or any sort of "coloured screens of death". I have left the clocks on the lowest setting for now, but in the coming days I will increase the clocks. At the moment it's all looking very promising!

Thanks for all your help guys!!

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

Well, after my last post, on the same day, a few hours after I got a black screen, but this time windows managed to recover it self. I got the following error message:

    Description
A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

    Problem signature
    Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
    Locale ID: 2057

    Extra information about the problem

    Server information: a9c32991-82f4-4b42-b75c-319e6ab810a1

After windows recovered itself, I got a balloon message at the bottom on the taskbar saying "Display driver AMD has stopped responding and has successfully recovered".

Any ideas now guys with that my next move should be??

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

I'm still getting the error with "X64_0x117_Tdr:2_IMAGE_atikmpag.sys". I have done some research on this problem and haven't come up with much information. Has anyone got any ideas?

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

There are a number of threads here about this issue. It's quite rare now as most of the cards have either been RMA'd or fixed.
    The problem appears to be with the timing of the VRAM on the card and can sometimes be fixed by the following;

    1) Flashing the card with the latest BIOS from the manufacturer.
    2) Downclocking the card through Catalyst Overdrive

If these don't work I would RMA the card.
Search for posts here from myself and Andmar.

    Or possibly Atari.

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

I cant RMA the card because I have sent it off twice with them testing it and coming up with no errors. I think I m just going to buy a new graphics card. I m personally sick of it now. Would you recommended the XFX 5870??

    I wouldn't buy a 5870 now. I'd get one of the 6xxx series or a GTX570.

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

I have read about the latest GTX 570 series. Looking around though, the memory clocks seem lower than my ATI 5830. I think I 'll have a look at the 6XXX series instead. Have you heard of any problems that the 6XXX series is giving???

Just out of curiosity which drivers are you using?

Apologies if you tried these already.

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

I have errors with the 11.4 and have had to revert to 10.12 which has removed the problem where i get an error on leaving my computer running for extended periods (9 minutes) unattended and I think it has something to do with power saving. I will try 11.4 again without the CCC when I get time.

Re: ATI Grey Screen of Death question

OK, let me know if anything happens.

    Just for everyone's interest:

I left my computer running for about 2 weeks. The only problem I had was a black screen where the computer would recover itself, with the balloon at the taskbar saying "Display driver failed and successfully recovered". After about 2 weeks I decided to turn the computer off for a night. In the morning I turned the computer on and for about 5 mins the screen was flickering now and again, while I was surfing the web. Then the coloured screen crash. I had to restart the computer from the restart button on the PC. After windows booted, again for about 5 minutes, while surfing the web, the coloured screen crash. Again I had to restart the computer. When windows booted, for about 10 - 15 minutes the screen would flicker again, with a coloured screen crash after it. I decided to turn the computer off completely for about 30 mins. I turned the computer on after the 30 minutes and the problem seems to have gone away for now.

    What I have realised ;-

    1.) During a 2 or 3 day period:

The computer is on during the day, and the computer is off at night. While the computer is on, I can do anything I want without experiencing any problems. However, after 2 or 3 days, in the morning, when the computer is turned on, after about 10 minutes, I get the coloured screen crash. If I was to restart the computer, the screen crash would happen again, but quicker than before. However if I was to turn the computer off and leave it off for 30 mins or so, the screen crash doesn't always happen again. Anyway, this process repeats itself every 2 or 3 days.

2.) During a period where the computer is left on for a long period of time:

If I leave the computer on for a long period of time, the screen crash happens less often. During the time where the computer is on for a long period of time I do get that driver crash.

From the above, it seems that turning the computer on and off, triggers the screen crash, and leaving it on for a long period of time, only drivers crashes happen.
