Would anyone advise against this graphics card?

I found this one on Novatech and it looks really good and quite cheap:

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...s/57701GB.html

My only concern is that it is Novatech brand so it might not run as well as one with a big brand name behind it (e.g. Sapphire, Asus, etc.). Is this a real cause for concern or does it look good?

    Thanks in advance,
    Varmint

What PSU and CPU do you have??

Do you need a single slot card and what is your budget??

Budget is about 100 pounds. My PSU is a Corsair HX 450 W and I don't know my PSU, but I know it's an AMD and has three cores.

Re: Would anyone advise against this graphics card?

The HD5770 1GB is quite an energy efficient card. However, for around £84 I would get the following card:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/263858

It is the same length as an HD5870 1GB which mean it is around 10.5" ~ 11.0" in length IIRC.

This card has similar performance to an HD5830 1GB but has a shorter PCB and lower power consumption:

    Edit!!

Here is a review of the XFX HD5830 1GB:

That one looks a bit better, and a bit cheaper too. Why is its length important? And does it only require once PCI-E slot?

    Thanks,

Good price, mine cost £102 last week. I got it because it was singlt slot and would fit into a ITX case better. Low noise, good card if space is limited.

Also, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3, how can I tell whether it will be compatible?

The HD6790 1GB and HD5830 1GB will be fine but you need to check if your case has enough space for an HD5830 1GB.

Re: Would anyone advise against this graphics card?

I found this quote online and was wondering what it meant:

At around 10 ¼” in length plus another inch for the rear-mounted PCI-E connectors,
I measure my case to have about 28-29 cm for the card but what is a rear mounted PCI-E connector? Does that mean it is at the back of the case? Because I think I can fit 10.25 inches, but 11 + a bit might be pushing it.

If I order it and it turns out to be too big, would sawing a bit of my case be an option (I have an Antec 300 Three Hundred and no drives in the drive bay that's in the way)?

I suspect it was meant to be front mounted. An HD5870 should fit fine in a Antec 300 so the HD5830 should be fine too.

Re: Would anyone advise against this graphics card?

The size mentioned is to do with the internal space inside the case, normally between the card slots in the back of the case and the drive bays
The rear mounted pci-e connector means that the additional pci-e power connector plugs in at the end of the card, rather than the side of the card.
Often the "back" is a reference to the end opposite of the end where you plug the monitor cables in.
ie the "back" of the card is the end that points toward the front of the case when it's fitted into the pc, Yes I know it makes no sense.
Haveing connectors plugging at the "back" end rather than the side is important because your adding between 0.5"-1" of extra clearance required to fit the card.

On the "novatech" brand cards, I bought a "novatech" branded card from them a couple of years ago, it was a geforce 6800LE, the card it self was a Leadtek card, afaik all the "novatech" brand cards are just other bands, although sometimes they are just stock cards, going buy the photo that card is actually an XFX card however the card you get might not be a xfx
Although XFX is the only ones to make a single slot cooler 5770.

Novatech is very good on warranties (or the last time I had to RMA something which again was a while ago) so sites I wouldn't trust for "own" brand products but I personally would trust novatech.
However that 5830 CAT linked to is a better card if it will fit in your case.
Also it's made a bit tricky as xfx actually do three different versions of the 5830 http://xfxforce.com/es/products/grap...ries/5830.aspx
The long card pictured in the ebuyer listing, a 2nd long card with an alternative cooler and a shorter version with the alternative cooler.
The XXX editiion 5830 does seem to be the one shown in that ebuyer listing http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...-the-card.html

If you can afford it I'd look at the gtx460 768mb which is slightly faster and shorter
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/261125 or http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...OV-GTX460.html those both seem to be the green version which is under clocked to lower power draw, will make it a bit slower.
This might be a better option http://www.ebuyer.com/product/235073 but you are pushing the price to £120

Re: Would anyone advise against this graphics card?

I have about 28-29 cm of clearance between the back of the case and the drive bays, so I think the XFX model will fit (10.25 inches = 26cm).

But is it an option to saw a bit off the drive bays supposing it doesn't fit? I have no drives in the drive bays that are taking up the space.

Yes, you could certainly do that, it's known as modding .

Retailers usually put the less respected brand under their own names. As long as they have a decent rma reputation you should be fine. I wish I could remember where I saw a list of manufacturers relating to rma for UK customers all I remember is that Asus are notorious for poor rma in the UK particularly GPU's.

Yep Nellys post was the one I was thinking of. Xfx is bad for failures which means the better retailers will handle the rma in house or very few people would take the risk on them(I think OCuk said they'd do this).
