    Hexus Raid Guide

Hi I was wondering if there was a Hexus beginners guide to RAID? I noticed the 2005 guide from searching the site and wondered if anything new had come around RAID wise in the last 6 years or if the size of current hdd's make raid arrays less relevant.

I wasn;t aware of any new stuff, so if there is anything, I too would be interested. Am using Raid 5 from ICH10 chipset at the moment and it#s been great for me....

I suppose the obvious question is what are you wanting from a RAID system? There's not really been a great deal of change in the base technologies tbh - the majority of exciting stuff in storage is SAN/NAS stuff - things like ZFS.

I was wondering if putting a raid scratch disk in an editing rig would be beneficial especially with working with raw avi in standard or HD.

That's one of the areas where a RAID0 would shine - where it's being used for scratch and you'd not really lose anything if it dropped a disk. That said... dependent on your budget and the amount of scratch store you need you may well have a better experience using an SSD instead.

    Re: Hexus Raid Guide

I think SSD would still be a little to expensive for the amount of space needed. Would 2x 500gb in RAID0 be more effective/efficient than a single 1tb drive? I can see the tb being easier to set up just stick it in. Would the RAID taking an hour extra to set up be worth it over the middle term?

More spindles is always going to be quicker ( assuming all your drives spin at the same speed )
