    HDD & Windows 7 issue

    A couple of times over the past week my system is taking a long time to boot from cold, around 20+ min. On the first occasion I rand chkdsk /r and it repaired a few corrupt attribute records then booted and ran fine, it's also been rebooted several times since, including once last night for windows update. This morning it once again took about 20 min to fully boot, I've copied the event log from running chkdsk again this morning. I've also used WD tools to check the drive (WD 500gb drive, now out or warranty so approx 3-4 years old I think) and both the quick and short tests show no errors. The only recent change I've made to my system was to add a new seagate 2tb drive about 2 months ago as a storage drive and at that time combined the partitions I previously had set up on the 500gb back into one full partition.

    Apart from that I've noticed no unusual noises, the temp of the drive sits around 40-45c and windows seems to be running fine once the corruption is repaired. Anyone got any ideas? Is there a known software issue that might cause this that may be worth a full format and reinstall of windows or is this likely early signs of failure despite it passing wd tools tests?

    For anyone interested, I turned it off over night and that drive never booted again. Lining up a shiny new SSD as replacement.

    Re: HDD & Windows 7 issue

    I'll give that a bash over the weekend, got the system running off a 40gb drive I pulled out my ps3 a while back at the moment to rule out it being dodgy cables, ports or a dying controller.

    <edit 01.05.11>
    Tried zero filling the drive with wdtools, which initially was a sucess and got windows back on it. Ran for a few hours then suffered horrible slow down and hanging then failed to reboot. Tried formating and the poor old boy went out in a blaze of worrying clicks and buzzing. However, I pulled to trigger on a 96gb v+100 kingston ssd which should be winging its way to me this week
