PC switch on but wont post.

I have been having this problem for a while now.

Sometimes when i turn on my computer the lights and fans come on but nothing appears on the monitor.

There is no beep sound to indicate that the computer is booting. But the POST code on the MB is FF which means the components ( ram, cpu etc) are ok and the computer is trying to boot.

After a lot of investigation i have come to the conclusion that the problem is with the motherboard. The motherboard is a abit ax78. It seems people with this board are facing similair problems.

What i am wondering is that were i to replace the motherboard would i need to reinstall the OS?

I have alot of programs on my current PC which i dont have the CDs for anymore, i can back up important files but reinstalling the OS means i will loose those programs.

What i want to know is whether there is a way to install a new motherboard without having the install the OS again.

    Thanks in advance

AFAIK you should be able to just plug in your old HDD to the new MoBo and away you go.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Try removing components one at a time to see if you can find the culprit, as well as testing the components in a second system making sure they all work. Try resetting the mainboard CMOS and removing the battery for a while.

I have tried all those thing, removed one stick or ram and tried to boot, then the other. I removed the graphics card etc.

    Same results.

If i can plug the hardrrive into new motherboard then that is great news. I can use an am2 cpu on a an am3 motherboard right?

Yes another PSU would be a useful test.

If you have progs that you don't have an install c.d.for now, then you should be using any of the free back up apps around that give a mirror image, thus avoiding that issue. I sense you are unaware of that as a way round the issue of no cd.

Whilst I believe Win 7's back up is good I am using Paragon myself.

Re: PC switch on but wont post.

I don't know about anything newer than XP, I managed to update hardware on one PC several times, since 2002 and haven't had to interfere with the programmes on the pc at all. I forget exactly what I did[delete all drivers maybe?] I looked on google and found the same method each time. When I say update, the motherboard/cpu has had three changes and most other parts have been changed that many times. Maybe it's time to try Windows 7, or maybe not...

Re: PC switch on but wont post.

I currently have a similar issue on my Abit board - an AB9 Quad GT. Nearly every time I Put a GTx 460 into the PC it thinks the CMOS jumper has been switched. I say nearly as I've had it working once or twice, then nothing. The on-board display reads CC which is similar to your error code.

I should be getting a different board in the next few days which will hopefully resolve the problem, but I obviously say it's the motherboard at fault.

Re: PC switch on but wont post.

Make sure the new board has the same brand chipset. As in if your current one has an amd chipset the new one has to also be the same brand.

Otherwise you might have to do a clean install and loose all your files.
