    Motherboard/CPU Problem

I have a motherboard from a Dell PC and have been trying to use Intel (dual core) S775 4500 CPU (my first Intel CPU) and I can't remember the exact name

The problem is as soon as I attach a heatsink the motherboard won't post.

If I leave the heatsink on top without attaching it posts. Currently on test bench.

I don't want to waste too much time as I've had enough

Have tried at least a couple of different heatsinks. Any advice?

    Thank you.

I can only think that the pressure of the HSF is causing a short somewhere.

if you have the board mounted on a testbench and you can be 100% certain that there are no shorts on the mountings, then I'm guessing on either a dried joint or a crack in the board, either way I'd say that the board is more likely to be the problem.

When you put the heatsink on, did you plug the fan as well? Try not to, see how it goes. (a bit of try and error method ;p)
