Changed CPU and pc keeps restating

Hi all I'm new to this fourm so be easy with me if iv made a mistake

Yesterday I decided to replace my i3 530 @ 4.2 ghz to a i5 760 and once completing the instalation i switched on the pc to find it restarting it self every 2-3 seconds and it will do this until I switch it off the mains. I even tried switching the components around to try and find the fault but all components past the test. So I'm thinking if it's the motherboard. I will be highly thankful if anyone can help me! Thanks

Try resetting the bios to defaults first. If you can't get into the bios, disconnect the PC from the mains and pull the battery out on the motherboard for 30 seconds or so. The i5 might be picking up your i3 overclock settings, and puking on them so restoring default clocks might solve it.

You could also see if there's a new bios available for your motherboard incase the i5 isn't supported with the version you have. You'll have to put the i3 back in to update it though if you can't get it to boot...

You probably knocked something while you were rummaging around. Check for connectors not fully plugged in, fan extensions shorting on the case, memory slightly dislodged, etc.

My Athlon XP+ did this with a poor PSU. Not sure what the difference is between the CPUs though tbh.

Re: Changed CPU and pc keeps restating

Thanks for all your help guys but nothing seems to work :S I took out the battery for over 30 seconds popped it back in didnt work, I also tried popping my I3 back in but it still restarts over and over again! The PSU is 600 W from corsair and i dont think its the components as iv tested them one by one so im starting to think i probably damaged the Motherboard when swopping the cpu :S

Just to be sure it's not a CMOS problem, you could try using the CLR_CMOS jumper with the battery removed or short the pins with a screwdriver if there's no jumper on it - some boards have a capacitor which allows you to keep settings when swapping the battery, this might last >30s.

Usually that won't happen, unless you got electrostatic charge built up by wearing the wrong cloths and/or stood out in the strong wind for some time etc, then you may toast the board by touching it. But it is odd that it still doesn't work with the old cpu install.

Do you see the bios screen at all? or it was simply black screen and kept restarting?
