Static sound coming through earphones with ASUS Xonar DG?

Anybody have any idea as to what's causing this? Tried reseating, blowing dust off, changing PCI slot etc...It's not major, but definitely noticeable in the background. Thanks.

Do you mean actual static as in white noise or some other noise like a buzz, whine or hum?

Is it on the front panel or the ports on the rear? I had it off the microphone port on the front, turns out was down to poor grounding on my case (Bitfenix colossus). Soldered on a ground lead to the headphone ports, and it is usable, though not perfectly clean

Had a slight hiss from my dg. The cause was the front panel cable running across and along side some of the power cable's from the psu and causing interference.

Do you mean pops and crackles? And is it on everything or just certain programs (games/music/video)? Are the speakers OK?

It's a constant sound with everything. Using the monitor speakers I can't really notice it but that could be because they are quieter. It's the same from the front and back headphone jack. I cleaned the surface of it with a paintbrush, could that have damaged it perhaps?

The sound is sort of a quiet crackling noise

Have you tried moving the soundcard to a different slot on the motherboard? Back in the bad old days these sounds were usually indicative of a resource conflict. I thought that these things were all behind us, but it's worth a try.

Another question: has this just started, and if so have you changed any hardware?

yes and yes. It started since I reset windows and cleaned my sound card with a paintbrush :/

What exactly does poor grounding mean? Is it dangerous in any way?

For mine, the audio shared the ground path with the two usb ports on the front, which meant that whenever the usb was in use, there would be feedback on the audio. Ideally, audio should have its own ground lead, to reduce the effect the rest of the system has on the cable. Its not dangerous for the front panel, the voltages/currents are low enough so as not to pose any risk ^^

i found that with my corsair 800D case, i ended up separating the grounds with a sharp blade on the tracks and the problem was resolved, corsair also sent me a USB3 replacement board as this was meant to fix the issue. I had bought a asus phoebus that has it's own breakout box as I needed a card with onboard headphone amp.

Sometimes the IR receiver makes noise, so if you have one, disable it in CP.

I have the same problem on my one, as soon as a sound plays and stops, it gets quiet for a few seconds and then starts to get that fuzzy white noise thing over again. Could be fixed with settings, but I am pretty sure its just interference from the other electronic components.

Either get one of the higher end sound cards with the shield over it to protect against interference, or better yet, an external usb sound card like this one as you can place it away from your pc.

I have already learnt to live with mine so it no longer bothers me as much.

I don't think the paintbrush can have damaged anything, unless you were very vigorous (I'm presuming you used a soft bristle artist's brush, not a decorator's 6"). When you say you "reset" Windows, what do you mean?

Have you checked that you have the most up to date drivers? Have you turned off onboard sound in the BIOS?

I have found the issue that I had: and that is the earbuds i am using have a mic output / aux input for phones (hands free talking) and the mic output was getting connected rather than the necessary aux connections.

My sound was more of a karaoke noise cancellation sound however. Anything above a certain Hz would be cut out.
