    Question Sbs 2003

Some months back (I don't like to rush at things) I posted that, following installing updates, whenever I tried to log on to my SBS 2003 HP ML310 server, I was logged straight back out again. I have tried logging on via web access, remote access, etc. always with the same result. I can only reboot by hitting the power button.

This is obviously not satisfactory so I need to 'get on' the machine and change something (or at least read the various log files and install updates).

Someone suggested log on in safe mode - how please. Hitting F9 enters ROM based setup utility, F10 the system config utility. Doesn't seem to respond to others Fkeys.

Should I boot with the disk1 of SBS2003 or....................?

Really would appreciate some advice please.

F9 for SBS? It's F8 for all the other Windows OS.

Are you able to remotely manage the server to see it's event logs?

As mentioned already you should be able to hit F8 on boot to get into Directory Restore mode - though it sounds like something is corrupt on logon so I suspect it'll show the same behaviour.

You could ping an email to Susan Bradley (http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley) - she's an SBS MVP and there isn't much she doesn't know about SBS.

If that still doesn't work there is always Business Critical Support from Microsoft - £199+VAT per incident (last time I checked) that should be able to get you working again.

Are you able to remotely manage this server via Computer Management to see it's log files?
You should then be abe to see what is causing your log offs within the application log.

Thanks for stuff so far - I have written to Susan Bradley.

To answer your question, no, not able to access the server itself by any means. Can access mail, files and suchlike but anything regarding the machine itself is not available. Even tried HP web based remote management but that does not give you access to anything useful.

I think gss03 was suggesting you run computer management on another server or workstation and connect to the SBS server over the network, which should enable you to view the computer management console without needing to login to the server itself.

Right click My Computer on your desktop > Computer Management, right click Computer Management and click Connect to another computer, then try Event Viewer

    hang on a sec,

you are logging on aon a XP/Windows 7 Desktop with the admin credentials , then right click my computer and select manage , right click the root of the computer management tree and select connect to other computer. In the dialoge box that pops up , put the name of your SBS box in.

if that then connects you shoudl be able to get to the event logs.

    Re: Sbs 2003

Thanks Moby, that was successful, previously I was using the remote desktop connection which resulted in an immediate log out.

There does not seem to be anything generally untoward with the system. I repeated the logon/off process and then checked the logs. The only report was a warning in application - userenv, event ID 1517 - windows saved user nnnn\administrator registry while an application or service was still using the registry during logoff. Memory used by the user's registry has not been freed, will be unloaded when no longer in use.

Often caused by services running as a user account - try configuring to run as local or network service accounts.

Would appreciate any suggestions and thank again.

    Re: Sbs 2003

Might sound daft, but have you tried a remote reboot of the server using shutdown.exe?

A clean shutdown and restart might fix it...or might not...this is Windows we are talking about here.

Shutdown.exe did exactly that but did not give a miraculous recovery

    Any more thoughts?
