Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
Within the last two days, my network connection has suddenly started acting the clown - it doesn't work unless I disable then enable the network adaptor (a Realtek 81somethingorother on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P).
I've tried
a) a different port on the router
b) the second ethernet port on the motherboard
c) new drivers (was using Win7 standard ones, now using the newest Realtek ones)
Nothing fixes it.
The router is brand new (a Netgear DGND3700) as the ADSL line was recently upgraded to ADSL2+ which meant an old Draytek 2600G wouldn't have worked. I'm inclined to think it's a problem on my machine rather than the router but... well... could it be the router?
The wireless connection, both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, works absolutely fine and haven't so much as missed a beat.
Anybody any suggestions?
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
I've had my share of strange problems with Realtek NICs, one would lock up after transferring a certain amount of data and another had an issue similar to yours but I solved it by plugging/unplugging the cable a few times. You could try updating the motherboard BIOS and the NIC drivers. Failing that, http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=110661748009
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
At least it's not just me then! ;)
I am planning on a Bulldozer upgrade but if €10 or so fixes it in the mean time, it might be worth a punt!
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
I think I'm now officially quite cheesed off... the Intel NIC does exactly the same. Grrr.
However, I'm still convinced it's my machine as a ReadyNAS Duo works a treat and if it was some kind of issue with the Gigabit ports in the router, that wouldn't work either. I don't think. :)
I'm also 100% sure that things worked properly on this new router but I can't for the life of me think what's changed.
Anybody have any other ideas as, once I've tried a laptop with a Cat 6 cable and wireless disabled, I'm left with sacrificing chickens.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
Try disabling the on-board LAN in BIOS if you haven't already.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
Same problem on my Brother's PC..realtek NIC and a Gigabyte motherboard. He's tried everything to no avail..he keeps have to disable and enable it in device manager even after a system reboot.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
I had yet another problem on a Sapphire motherboard but you'd have to physically remove/insert the cable a few times before the connection light would even appear. Again though, an Intel NIC solved this.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
I have an Asus EeePC with a realtek, it just stops working every now and again, you have to unplug the board to get it to come back to life! On another of my systems the realtek thought it should have a mac address of 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00! Realtek sucks, disable it and bang in an intel nic if you can.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
try a dieeferent operating system, same problem? claim on the warranty
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
Try a different OS? Leave off! :)
Anyone know where I can get some chickens on the cheap? Time for offering up sacrifices to some deity or other I reckon.
I'll just put up with it for the time being. Might try reinstalling the OS at some point but I can't be bothered right now.
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
I think he meant troubleshoot with another OS as opposed to switching to one.

yeah sorry for not making that clear, even using an ubuntu live install disk and just running from disk.
saying that i had a problem on ubuntu 9.10 where if i ws connected to wifi and i disabled my adapter it wouldnt reenable. thats fine on the latest distro now though! Also sometimes i get the problem where if im on W7 and i disable my adapter and i restart i wont be able to reenable before another restart, but thats just silliness on my part
Re: Network adaptor only works after disable/enable
same problem here with an atheros card.
It would die after / while transfering data.
even after a re-install.
FIX:
Go into Device Manager
Open network card properties.
Advanced.
Set TASK OFFLOAD to OFF.
i havn't had a problem since.
iirc, i think that's the setting. if not come back and i'll note them all.
