    Network dissappeared gone

I have a dell insipron 1501 laptop that was acting strange? I always have it on by my chair and the last week or so I noticed when I picked it up and opened it (keep in mind the cover is never closed) and it had a total black screen that slowly would open in sections and it got to the point it would almost freeze and was basically useless unless you rebooted it and worked ok not great but ok till I would put it back down again and it got worse n worse? I called a friend thats real good with puters and he said do the msconfig n disable all and restart it to see if it was faster n it was BUT I totally lost my network connection completely it is nowhere to be found and I mean nowhere period? I even went into the search and no network or network drives showed up it was gone off the face of the earth! I also noticed my lower task bar? on the bottom of the screen went from blue to an off white color. I went to control panel and clicked on network connections and when it opened I had a white page with no icons at all? I went to go n try n restore it but is wouldn't do anything. I then hooked it up direct and the same thing no network at all its gone nowhere to be found. So I went to try n hook up for a new network and it says I already have one? well if I do where in the hello is it? I run xp home edition DSL. I ran all the anti virus with nothing showing up so I and my friend are clueless HELP! and my other puter works fine so its not an issue as far as that goes..HELP
tried all the above in safe mode too but no cigar same results..Thank you mrbs

Is it by chance a realtek NIC? Before you do anything else try turning it off, removing the power lead and the battery.

    Re: Network dissappeared gone

Probably disabled the driver from startup with msconfig, check it again to see if anything relates to a network driver.

If you can't spot anything then list everything here and we'll be able to tell you what you need to keep and what you can lose.

There's your problem most likely. You've disabled the software needed to run your network connection. Go back into msconfig and re-enable the network card software.

    Regarding your original no-network problem.
Some Dell's will disable the LAN socket if running on battery. Check the Dell Quickset settings to change this functionality.

    Looks like a troll account.

If it's not, take it to someone who knows what they're doing to get it fixed

Go to msconfig again and write out everything that appears on the Startup tab then post back and we'll take a look for you.

    Re: Network dissappeared gone

Do you have firewall software on your computer, virus/rootkit may have triggered it, causing the machine to lock down.

    Re: Network dissappeared gone

Those all look fine but you said you had disabled everything in Startup prior to the problems arising so that would be the best place to look.

I disabled enabled disabled enabled reboot reboot etc.???? no I didn't do anything TILL I had problems! and another thing is that my screen is different then before the problems and when you click on the icon in bottom tray at start up that says "could not reconnect all network drives" there are no normal icon like MPC dsl or wireless icons there is NOTHING there?
