    Mobo/RAM Compatibility Question

Hi guys, appreciate the help confirming this:

Just to make sure I'm not missing something -

A friend is building his first PC and has ordered this for RAM:
    Kingston 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM (kit 2x4Gb)HyperX

His first choice mobo was unavailable so another was recommended but looked unable to handle the RAM so he's looking at going the next step up. Is it necessary?

    Mobo 1 Memory Spec. -
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory
    Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
    Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

    Mobo 2 Memory Spec. -
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory
    Dual Channel memory architecture.
Support for DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules
    Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

I assume the 1600 RAM wont operate at full capacity (or at all) on Mobo 1.
    Is that correct?

    Thanks.

    Re: Mobo/RAM Compatibility Question

    Hi there,

You are correct. The 1600 RAM would probably work fine, but only at 1333 speed in Mobo 1. DDR3 memory is speed backwards compatible, so if the MoBo can't support its speed, it will go as fast as the MoBo can support. You will probably want to confirm the speed by going into BIOS (press del, F1, F2 at startup normally). In Bios you can manually set the speed the RAM is running at.

Some MoBos allow you to overclock, so you *may* be able to increase the speed of the RAM up to 1600 in BIOS. This would be overclocking the mobo, though, so may not be recommended!

    Cheers!

    Re: Mobo/RAM Compatibility Question

He's probably better off with the second board if he really must run 1500 mhz RAM. I don't think there's much to be gained in having 1333 MHz ram and 1600 MHz RAM anyway, depends pn the price difference if it's only £5 - £10 then it might be worth the extra spend, if it's any more than that I think I'd be buying the 1333 MHz RAM and save some money.

    Re: Mobo/RAM Compatibility Question

    Thanks guys.

I suppose it's not just the 1600 vs 1333 but the potential to go even higher in the future. Plus in other specs the 2nd mobo supports some USB 3.0 ports and the price different is only 8 Euros.

    The 1st mobo is a - GIGABYTE GA HA65M UD3H B3 1155 DDR3 MATX

    The 2nd mobo is - GIGABYTE. P67A-D3-B3 1155 P67 4DDR3 32GB GBLAN ATX
