    Re: Backups...?

Yeah, it's knowingly only a minimal level of back up, but I don't have that much irreplaceable data at the moment. During my PhD I backed up across multiple sites and computers (including laptops) + cloud (only it wasn't called cloud back then, it was called emailing yourself and other people ).

That makes me feel ancient. I still have (sad, I know) rolls of ACSII paper punch tape and some punch card decks. Not that I need a good sort out in the loft, or anything.

Haha I did the e-mailing trick during my PhD as well for a couple of years. Flatmate figured out how to SSH into the university computers eventually so changed to that.

You should see our attic. I think if I look hard enough we could rustle up a copy of Which Holidaye 1754, and some left over dowels from building the Mary Rose. At least that's what it feels like. Reminds me of the Michael McIntyre sketch about the man drawer

    Re: Backups...?

Punchcards highlight the other problem - they're pretty durable forms of data, but finding working machines to read them is another matter.

You would be hard pushed to find rolls of paper for hole punch machines these days!

As for my back up, I keep important stuff stuff on a Linux server with RAID1 and back that up to magneticx tap[e (Ultrium 2) whenever I need to. Things like photos I keep on my laptop and the server until I have a tape backup when I can delete them from the laptop.

Given the falling costs and increasing capacities of USB flash drives, that may be a viable backup medium, apart from the fact that they are too easily lost, and long term reliability issues, so ideally you need to take two. But it all depends on the value of the data to you, and how easy it is to recreate (if at all).

Yup. Most goes onto USB for me - when stupid manufacturer's don't then render it useless by lack of updates.

The really important stuff gets multiple back-ups and I bought a bluray burner so I can do large discs of photos and really valuable stuff as an added precaution.

    (That's the theory anyway)

    Re: Backups...?

I use an old Sempron 3600+ with a 2TB, 1.5TB and 2 x 500GB drives for backup purposes. I have FreeNAS on it and rSync to it when needed (usually not more than a week), backing up my desktop, MediaPC, work laptop and netbook as well as my flash drive. I also sync my documents online using SkyDrive as well as having all my family photos on SkyDrive as well as the MediaPC and backup NAS.

That means that anything important and irreplacable exists on two machines in my house as well as backed up externally. All other stuff is backed up in the house and is either replaceable with some effort, or deemed non-critical.

Take out the drive , buy a caddy ( £5 for the 2.5" drives ), format it and use it like a USB ?
