    can i run a PCIe 1x in a PCIe 8x slot?

Want to put USB3 in my work machine but the PCIe1x slot will be touching the GPU. Can I put the card in the spare 8x slot or will that cause problems?

Not ordered the card yet, but something along these lines: http://www.ebuyer.com/240329-plexus-...sb2-0-2portusb

for anyone reading this thread in future these may be better products

4USB3 ports and a sata power connector rather than molex: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom...-(-ti-chipset-)

2USB3 ports, but also 2sataIII internal ports too: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...oller-with-ncq

Will work fine, any PCIe card will work in any PCIe slot, some smaller slots have an open back to allow you to fit a larger card. Note however that by installing something in the x8 slot might revert the x16 slot to x8 mode - check your manual if it's something you'd be bothered about.
