Intel GMA4500HD will only output at 1600x900 to TV

    Hi guys,

I'm trying to output video from my laptop (Compaq Presario CQ71) to my tv via HDMI. I've got the picture and sound to the HDTV fine but it only takes up a portion of the tv screen. The max resolution allowable by the laptop is 1600x900 and it does not seem to support anything higher.

It has an Intel GMA4500HD integrated chip which says it does not support tv modes in graphics properties!!!!!

When I create a manual custom reolution of 1920x1080 it says this custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity!!!!!

Any ideas of a way to get it to display at 1920x1080 or am I just stuck with it?

    Thanks for any advice

Re: Intel GMA4500HD will only output at 1600x900 to TV

You should be able to. Make sure the refresh rate is no higher than 60hz. Also try restarting with the external display plugged in.

For manually changing it (found on the web, not my own):

    1. Click Right Mouse Button on Desktop
    2. Choose "Screen Resulution"
    3. Point the external monitor image with too low resolution set (most probably it will be the small one with "Display: Generic Non-PnP Monitor")
    4. Right click on the icon and choose "Properties"
    5. In the new window ("Generic Non-PnP...") choose the "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver dor Mobile" big tab
    6. Click the "Graphics properties..." button
    7. Wait some time patiently (about 15 seconds!)
    8. Choose "Display->Custom Resolutions" from left menu
    9. Confirm that you know what you're doing (if it is so) - "Yes"
    10. Choose the proper Display ("Monitor" in my case)
    11. "Basic Settings" will be enough (radio button)
    12. Set the proper Width/Height/Refresh_Rate/Color_Depth for your external monitor (in my case: 1920x1200@60Hz 32bit)
    13. Leave the default Timing_Standard ("CVT" - timing standard newer then "GTF")... at least I did so
    14. Add this custom resolution (require confirmation).
    15. Go to the Display->General_Settings, choose the "Monitor" and set the new resolution (it should be available from Windows Screen Resolution menu as well from now on)
    16. Confirm & Enjoy!

Re: Intel GMA4500HD will only output at 1600x900 to TV

    Thanks for the response Kalniel.

I've followed the above through until stage 14 when I try to add the custom resolution. This is where I encounter the "custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity" popup. Upon clicking ok I go back to where I was but without having made the custom resolution

Anybody else encountered this issue and know how to troubleshoot this issue?

    Cheers.

[Edit: Ooops - just fixed it. Apparently having it set to clone dislay modes will limit the resolutions to those abe to be displayed on both screens. Turning it to single screen mode and selecting the tv opened up all the other resolutions!!!]

Re: Intel GMA4500HD will only output at 1600x900 to TV

on some lappy's it needs to be set up as a TWIN monitor arrangment or it tries to set your second monitor (TV) to same res as lappy

try setting the tv as a second screen, like a dual monitor arrangement and then set that resolution to the correct one. Then drag and place the video software (Media player or wahtever) into that second monitor and resize to max.
    might work

Does on a lappy I've got at work for an HD plasma we've got and it just won't do it another way.

Cheers Zak - basically I did what you said about having both screens separate from one another and not cloned and now it seems to work fine!!!
