    my attempt to o/c my xp2500 @@UPDATE@@@

Want To O/c My Asus Mobo Help Please
    HI ALL

WELL i just had a bad experience i have a barton xp2500 not a mobile just a normal retail one i was under the impression these would do 200 fsb

    i have a asus a7n8x e deluxe mobo

512 2x256 meg corsair value 3200 ram matched pair

    xp barton 2500

    tagan 480w psu

aerolite cpu fan rated to 3200

so as i did with my old sytem a little bit of o/c thought i might just give it a quick try

anyways i set the ram to 200mhz as i was running at 166 on auto

and set the fsb to 200

booted up and well what can i say didnt get a blue scenn of death i got the windows could not start properley due to a hardware or software change choose how you want to restart your system

so i press start normally and it just hangs there nothing happens countdown timer stops at when i press enter

so i must be doing something wrong any help please

also when i run cpu-z it tells me that my cpu is running at 167 fsb why is that when it should be 166

i turned my cpu fan on full before i booted up

perhaps there are some settings i need to make or adjustments to voltage i aint sure if you let me know what you require i will try and find it out and get back to ya

    ie voltages and stuff

    thanks

i only wanted to give it a quick go lol maybe i have a barton that just wont go

Try upping Vcore to 1.7 or 1.75V.

it should actually be 166.66... so 167 is rounded up.

Yep don't worry too much bigjonny it just needs a bit more juice and a tender touch is all

First you need a program to test whether your cpu is stable by running it at 100% load. Such a program is Prime 95

    http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v238.exe

This tries to find new prime numbers, but also has a 'torture test' available that'll really work your cpu. Best of all, if it detects an error - it simply stops - so no crashing. You want to use the middle torture test (maximum heat).

Also if your mobo came with a utilty for monitoring temperatues you should have that installed because increasing the freq. and upping the voltage both increase the heat output. If not you could use motherboard monitor. Or your hand.

Then up your vcore to 1.675, fsb to 200 and off we go. If you boot into windows then run prime 95 while keeping an eye on your temps. If you can run prime 95 for 2 - 24 hours without an error then your looking good.

IF you cant get into windows or get an error then up the vcore to 1.7 and try again.

My 2500 needed 1.775v to get to 2.2ghz and that made it run pretty hot but as long as you're mid-fifties under load then your ok.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on, huh?

I had to wind my 2500 up a bit on the voltage side but both of them now do 200FSB fine with a bit more voltage...

ok havent treid the prime test yet ran 3dmark 2001 4 times no probs nut i am worried about my temps using mm5 motherboard monitor 5 it says my temp is 50 before i o/c it was 45 this was on exiting 3dmark i have a aero lite fan which is rated to 3200 which now shows up on boot maybe i should look at getting a better fan

have 2 intakes at front 1 outtake at side and 1 at back and psu aswell using the aero blower fans

i tried 1.725 and it woudnt boot so tried 1.75 and boots fine and runs 3d2001

tbh im a little worried to run this prime test as it has taken me a few months saving and a small loan to get this comp and i dont wanna blow it by it over heating

you think motherboard monitor or the asus temp prog is best

mmm well if they are both reporting the same temps -- whichever you like best, has the clearsest display.....best functionality.... try the asus 1 as it was designed specifically for your mobo it will set itself up automatically at least...

Prime isnt any more dangerous than running 3dmark - id say its alot safer as it runs in a window and you can keep an eye on your voltages and temps as it is going to make sure everything is ok. Plus if your cpu isnt 'completely' stable at given vcore then it will detect a mathematical error and stop running, letting your cpu cool back down rather than simply locking up like 3dmark would do. plus since ur g card isnt involved, you know any prob is down to cpu. Also has a setting for testing you r ram too..... USE IT hehe.

50c is warm but nothing too toasty my friend. let prime run for for an hour and if your still this side of 55 ur doing fine, no need to go throwing money at the problem.

lol i ran this prime and it didnt even last 2 minutes said something about rounding up and my level was 0.499999999 acceptable level should be 0.4

lol what the hell is all that about set my fsb back to 166 for now until you guys give me some advice

    is the ram craaap

    cpu overheting

maybe more voltage on the vcore already pumping it 1.75

as long as ur temp is fine the chip is fine. try putting the Chip down to 2.1ghz and running prime again. If it lasts then you know that was the problem. All the info was just saying ur cpu made an error - cos its unstable.

Im sure your ram wil be fine, but if you suspect that instead then simply raise the voltage from 2.6 -> 2.7. Ram is usually rated to run between 2.6 and 2.8v anyway.

Pretty sure ur chip needs that little extra then. your fine as long as ur temps are fine. It's up to you whether you bump the vcore to 1.775 and try 2.2ghz again OR you could try running the chip at 2.1 for a while, let it burn in for a week, then try doing 2.2 again.

try lowering the multiplier too, that can reduce narsty crashing probs - giving a lower clock speed but faster overall speeds. its what i did on my old cooling as it let me run the mem in sync with the main bus. now i can go all the way tho =) need to give my cpu 1.8v tho ;/

Its not a locked chip is it?
If you knock the multiplier down to 10 and run at 200FSB. See if that runs stable before you try shooting for 200*11 - Your setup may not be capable of it.

yeah chip is locked so cant adjust the multiplier

    update so far

changed the voltage to 1.775 and ram to 2.7 prime crapped out on second test lol

so now what i have done is lowered the fsb to 190 left voltage and ram same currentley on test 4 prime 95 so each time its pushing a bit more

temp at the min is 55

ok just looked at prime and it says self test 1024 passed now going into second test

i wonder if the chip just wont do 200 fsb or what

should i adjust the ram settings ie only corsair value remember this

    up the voltage even more

i did try the multiplier by the way set it to 10 but just sees it as a xp 1100 lol

mmmmmm i am enjoying this though but filling my pants at the thought of hearing a pop or funny smell

hmm, Is it the VS 3200 stuff? If it is it might be worth checking the timings to get them as loose as possible. That stuff might not even run at its rated speeds.
One way to find out if the RAM is crapping out & not the chip is to run a 5:6 ratio and run the RAM at 200 & the FSB at 166. If it still fails prime(3rd test) then you know its the RAM

ok stlll running prime ok atm so see how it goes for now

still worried about temps though currently 56 but no more

i will do that though green tbh that is what i have been running at for the past week anyway

my fsb at 166 and ram at 200 at not had a single lock up or anything all with default voltages aswell

May be a silly question - if you've been running with that ratio of FSB to RAM up to now, are you not pushing the RAM even higher by raising the FSB or have you set the ratio back to 1:1

Your AGP and PCI busses will be out if your FSB is at 190, U want ur FSB to be 100/133/166/200
