    A Question about SATA

    Hello all,
I currently use the GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard, which supports

    6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
I have heard things about backwards and forwards compatibility in SATA solid state drives. If I use the Crucial 64GB M4 SSD (which is SATA III) drive in my current motherboard would the only disadvantage be not being able to get 6gb/s speeds?

    Thanks in advance,
    Varmint

    Re: A Question about SATA

You pretty much nailed it. The SSD will work but only at SATAII speeds not SATAIII. SATA is almost always backwards compatible to the one before.

    Re: A Question about SATA

SATA II is supposed to be 3 gigabits per second. Does this mean that the write speed will not exceed 3000/8 = 375 megabytes per second?

    Re: A Question about SATA

Give or take, the SSD will max out SATAII but whether it actually gets to 375MB/s in a real world scenario I don't know.
