HP Microserver with no video output

I recently decided i have had enough with the crappy speeds of freenas and i would just use ubuntu server. I moved the server over to my PC so that i could use my normal monitor for the install, set everything up, installed US, got it going, plugged it up back where it should be and commenced configuration using putty on my PC.
I realized the hard drives installed where not formatted correctly but rather than fiddle about with GNU Parted or fdisk (as im rusty with linux and i just want to get this damn thing done) i thought i would just pull it back over to my monitor and use the gparted live disk.
As soon as i plugged it back into my monitor and switched it on i got zero video output, no bios, no flashing, the monitor doesn't even detect a video signal. The only time i managed to get video back out of it was by removing the battery for 10 minutes to flash the bios and then putting it back in before rebooting. Once i rebooted again after that, back to nothing. I have tried a couple of different monitors and cables to ensure there isnt anything too daft causing it but other than that im stumped.

I am still able to SSH into it and do things but im concerned there may be a hardware fault

    Any suggestions?

Its not just because the HP likes to see the monitor on bootup is it? Both my HP Server with 2008 R2 and my 2 ESX boxes will never give displays on a newly plugged-in monitor until rebooted.

Re: HP Microserver with no video output

Unfortunately not, i have rebooted countless times to no avail

Even if i do reset the bios, go in and set the VGA output to always on, still nothing at all on the next boot. So unusual!

Almost wish i still had a glass monitor to try with it

Anyone any ideas if you can put a PCI-E x16 card in there (low profile obviously)?

Yes, it has a 16x slot, low profile, single slot and careful on the power requirements.

Im still intrigued that resetting the BIOS makes it work only once.

Does the video remain if you do nothing but reboot it without changing any BIOS settings?

I know the video out works on mine, since I used it the first time to see what BIOS version it was, but since then, Ive only used it remotely via the IPMI card.

I will have another check tonight but i lost the will with the damn thing yesterday, i just cannot seem to get samba set up so it will share to my PC and my Mac

Previously no, after leaving the bios untouched it still made no difference and would only boot that once after a fresh reset.

I will probs go for a bog standard low end ATI if i do anything

Re: HP Microserver with no video output

Did you ever solve this problem? I have a new Microserver which booted just once and has not shown any video since. I have tried resetting the CMOS. I have tried three different screens. It has a remote acess card fitted and I have tried it with and without the RAC card inserted.
