    Winzip limit

    Any ideas how to increase the limit of a winzip file..

    or an alternative compression program.

    I want to compress my 4.4GB backup folder so I can fit it on a DVD.

    Cheers in advance.

    iMc - it really depends on what you're compressing and how. A little bit of research can help you choose the best dictionary size and compression methods to use. For example, compressing lots of little files will benefit from a solid archive.

    I'm with Agent - I prefer winrar and love the features, though for compatabilities sake I usually to right click > send to compressed folder if it's anything trivial.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    also, it depends on the file system. FAT32 has (iirc) a limit of 2gb per file.

    if you've got lots of large files (movies, images etc) they can't be compressed
    if you've got outlook pst files etc, you can run a compress operation on them in outlook to reduce the size a bit, but depending on the amount of movement in the pst, you won't really see huge gains.
    I'm in favour of ace format, which winrar can handle quite well too - just make sure you bung the installer or commandline version preconfigured with a batch file to extract - will save on memory usage when restoring.

    Im pretty sure its 2gb for FAT16 and 4GB for FAT32 ?
    (2^32)-1 byte works out at one byte under 4 gig.

    Or am i totaly wrong here ? ;p
