    Question Wordpad.exe

    Heya folks!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but I hope so..otherwise I'm sorry but I really need some help. It's about my wordpad, everytime I use it, it takes about 90-98% CPU, which is not normal. I asked my b/f to send me his version of wordpad, so I re-named my wordpad to wordpad2 and tried his but it didn't made any different though it still takes up 98% CPU.

What shall I do? Re-install Windows?

My first thought was that my computer might have got some kinda a virus thing going on. And a couple of days ago when I stared Ad-aware 6 it founded a couple of virus stuff. But I deleted them and since then I havn't got any new virus.

And I've checked one and twice with Ad-aware 6 and Spybot - Search & Destroy, but havn't find anything. And I've updated them etc.

So my question is, What shall I do?

    Cheers//Moonshade

Do you really need to use Wordpad? I'm sure there are some free alternatives, like Open Office (but I've never tried them!)

Reinstalling Windows is a bit drastic, but if its been a few months then it'll speed up your PC anyway.

Hm, yeah as a matter of fact I do. Since I've got no other thing to use if I have to write something for school or similar. I don't have the office package on my comp .

Well, maybe is a good thing to do, I don't know. I havn't reinstalled it in a year or so, so maybe that's good.

But you don't know why my wordpad is acting like that?

If you don't want to pay for Office, then this is a free alternative (although I haven't personally used it): http://www.openoffice.org/

Sorry, I have no idea! Whenever I get problems I can't solve like that I just put the Windows 2000 CD in and reinstall, normally solves it.

Well, I will probably reinstall it too. I think something is a bit wrong with my version that I have now. And since I havn't reinstalled my computer since I got it over a year ago..it might get good !

The I can install linux on my computer too !

    Thank you anyway!

OpenOffice is whole heap better than wordpad and it's open source so its FREE and it's all I ever use and more than I need from an office suite.

I'll see what I can find about you CPU utilization problem. Have you run virus software like AVG rather than just the adware tools.

Moonshade, I'm afraid I don't have any idea why WordPad is using that much CPU time, but I'd heartily endorse OpenOffice. It's pretty user-friendly, it's got a very fully featured wordprocessor, also a spreadsheet package, and a Powerpointalike presentations package, and it will (if you want) work natively in Microsoft formats (i.e. Word, Excel and Powerpoint files). You have to set the options to make it do that, but it's really a piece of cake. The downside is that it's a 63MB download, the upside is it's free. If the download's too big, there are people that do CDs for a nominal cost, see http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/sellers.html for details. They'll post you whatever the latest build is that they have plus a lot of them do CDs with other useful stuff on - have a look at nCD/Wilmslow High School's project at http://www.wilmslowhigh.cheshire.sch.uk/ooo/ , for instance.

You don't mention whether you actually have a virus scanner installed and running; Ad-Aware and Spybot will pick up spyware, but they're not virus scanners; for a free virus scanner, you could try http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ; AVG Free Edition. There are weekly (at least) updates and it's free for single home users.

edit: Well said, ed, two minds with but a single thought

further edit: Moonshade, OpenOffice has versions for Windows and Linux, among others so that might be an even better reason to try it.

I think your problem is related to this...

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;290512

so you could try install service pack 2 for windows 2000 see if that helps

    Google and you get this...

"This problem occurs in a Microsoft Word document, a Microsoft WordPad document, or ... Ports Between 1024 and 5000 and Cause High CPU Utilization (Q290512) If ..."

abiword is a nicer word processor than openoffice to use, if not quite as good in terms of power
