    XP LAN issue

Hi guys, I'm currently tearing my hair out with this one!

Just reinstalled my in-laws PC (fresh XP install) and trying to get the ethernet up and running to no avail.
Using XP SP2 on an intel 845 chipset, Virgin cable box (works fine as i've got it plugged into my work laptop to post this) Firewall disabled.

I've got the drivers I need, they install ok, all tests ok but when plugging in the cable it just wont find an IP address and a repair does not good. I've tried the winsock repair apps as I know the connection is good but the machine just wont connect. I have tried taking the IP from the good machine & manually editing the settings including DNS server details but it can't seem to find the DNS server.

The disc is an n-lited version of XP, I don't know what was removed but I cant see how that would effect things especially as I've got the right drivers & tried the winsock route.

    I'm stumped...

    HELP!!!

    Re: XP LAN issue

DNS is something to look in to further along the diagnostics process - it's a bit premature when dealing with a PC that won't pick up an IP.

When assigning a static IP, can it ping the gateway IP?
    Can it ping 127.0.0.1?
Has Internet Connection Sharing been enabled accidentally?
Are you definitely using the correct drivers for the NIC?
What is the MAC for the NIC? I have had one instance where I've seen a PC with a dodgy PSU cause the NIC to revert to an all-zero MAC.
Why did you use an n-lite XP?
What model PC, motherboard & NIC? Which drivers are you using?
    What other software is installed?
Is the working PC getting a public or private IP? I have seen Virgin kit need a reboot before a public IP can be given to a different PC (or NIC/MAC). If the working PC is actually getting a public IP, you must re-enable the firewall on the non-working PC immediately. You should also get them to invest in a proper NATing router ASAP.

    Re: XP LAN issue

Using settings from the working machine (ip, defult gateway, subnet mask, two DNS servers)

    Ping Default gateway? - No
    Ping 127.0.0.1? - Yes

Not sure of ICS as its not even in the options and there is only 1 LAN port (dont you need to to enable it?)

Drivers - Yes, most definately correct.

    MAC isn't all 0's, starts 00 though.

Used nlited install as thats all I have access to right now, moving house and all my stuff is in storage & I grabbed the first disc I saw when we were packing which happened to be this Asking around at work for a proper disc but its looking doubtful.

Mobo is an Intel D845GVSR, using drivers form the the intel site

No other software apart from the intel drivers & intel chipset stuff, fresh install. Tried twice.

No idea on public/private IP? Its just a bog standard Virgin cable modem, this worked before the reinstall (well, the internet on it did, the PC not so well!)

Using everything as 'obtain automatically) I get a 169.254.x.x IP and no gateway IP which MS says means no DCHP server found (?) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067

    Re: XP LAN issue

I would eliminate OS and driver issues by booting the computer from a linux live CD and see if it has network access then. If it does not then you know there is an issue with the PC hardware, or with the router or cabling.

    Re: XP LAN issue

If its a direct connection to a virgin modem then the modem needs rebooted before you connect each different piece of kit to it, otherwise the modem thinks its still connected to the previous device and won't give out a new ip.

The 169 ip suggests that the nic isn't recognising any kind of connection at all, you mentioned winsock commands, but with a fresh install and drivers there should be no ip stack or winsock catalogue conflicts needing reset.

Do you have a router at all? can you plug the pc into the router and see if you get a 192 ip address instead? might be a faulty NIC after all.

One last basic thing (I only really deal with basic things tbh). Are you using the same cable on the laptop as you are on the pc? again, might be a faulty cable

oh, and boot in safe mode with networking too, see what that gives you.

ps: i lied about that one last thing, if you remove the coax cable from the modem then the modem acts as a router and should supply a 192 ip address, if this doesnt happen then the fault is definitely not with the modem

    Re: XP LAN issue

oh, in case its the OS hanging onto the IP address, try ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew in the command prompt, repair is supposed to do this but have seen it fail at times.

    Re: XP LAN issue

I'll try rebooting the router thanks, it's cable & I don't have access to another modem or router

The NIC worked fione before I reinstalled windows, now it doesn't. Same cable being used.

    Re: XP LAN issue

unlike win7 xp has different versions so it looks like u used the wrong disk ?

maybe try a key off another pc and use phone activation ?

    Re: XP LAN issue

Yes its an enterprise (2nd hand system from bigpockets iirc) COA but a Home disc, I DO have some home COAs somewhere I think but as mentioned my entire life is currently in storage until we get our new house signed for and I've currently got bigger things to worry about than windows!

As the resident 'techie' though I get blamed when stuff doesn't work or go according to plan even though windows took 10 minutes to boot before I started tinkering & I was asked to do this!

Windows activation doesn't even ask for the key, just asks to activate then fails and says to ring MS.

    Re: XP LAN issue

No, I pretty much know the answer unfortunately. Although that is a bit of a silly answer & I'd pobably get on at someone in the same position I have experienced the MS telephone robots before

so you don't want to ring a free number and tap a few numbers into an automated service to see if they will activate it ?

    fair enough.

And being a enterprise key with a home install (which I'd had 'fun' with previously) I was going to say the phone route didn't stand a chance, but it has for some reason worked...I'm confused, but glad my day hasn't been totally wasted now!
