    SSD Dead?

    Hi All,

I've been experiencing BSOD's for the last couple of days, and it has got to the stage now that the pc will only boot and get into windows for a couple of mins before hanging now.

I installed windows on an old drive and used the same sata port and cables and that can run fine so I'm guessing that its the ssd and not the mobo.

I have also tried booting off one stick of memory at a time and that makes no difference, it still hangs.

I tried booting off the hardrive and the ssd plugged in too to try to get some files off it, but after just a minute or so the ssd hangs, the other drive and windows is fine, I just can't access the ssd again. I assume that rules out a corrupt windows on the ssd.

I have downloaded the OCZ ssd tool to try to scan the drive etc but it won't stay accesable for long enough to get teh tool to work. By the time I've booted and got to the tool the ssd has locked up.

I even tried to do a fresh install of windows to the ssd, but by the stage that it gets to select a drive to install to it can't see the ssd anymore as it has locked.

Oh and pretty much everytime the ssd locks i have to unplug and replug the sata lead for it to be detected in bios.

So anyone got anything else I can try before I have to rma the damn thing?

    Cheers
    Cam

In regards to getting your data off the thing, try using a USB hard drive caddy.

As for fixing the SSD, nope.

Is it an F4 BSOD by any chance?

If you mean a bsod with a bunch of text and then STOP:000000F4 then yes

Does that mean anything to you?

Its a common problem with some SSD's not being compatible, its a joke imo and they should recall them all

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourc...&q=f4+bsod+ssd

Almost every SSD has the problem apart from Samsung ones and Intel ones. (Hence why i sold my Crucial M4 and got a Samsung 830)

RMA'ing the SSD wont help at all, you will just get the same problem again

Hmm i've been using this ssd for over a year now without issue up till now. I did notice that there was abunch of Win7 updates that came down the day before it started to act up, but as I can't even get it to stay up when its not the boot disc surely it can't be a windows (on the ssd) issue?

If its been fine from the start then i guess there is a chance its the SSD, if you have been getting them from the beggining then there is hardly a chance

    Re: SSD Dead?

    One other thing that I have noticed is a screen flash up during bios that says;

"JMicron Tech Corp pci express to sata II host control

Detecting drives; done; no drives found"

Hmm this install of windows on a WD Raptor harddrive had just started to seize up every few seconds. Maybe its not the ssd after all. Gonna try the ssd and this drive on diff set of sata sockets on the mobo, think some ofthem aren't jmicron.

Ok I'm on an Asus P8Z68 -V Gen 3 mobo and it seems that all the sata ports are controlled by the Intel sata controller, but then there is a JMicro storage controller on the bios and jmicron controller driver on the disc that came with the mobo. The manual refers to the JBicro contoller controlling ahci so the fact that i get a JMicron message saying that "no drives found" may infer that the issue is with the mobo after all?

I had the Jmicron controllers drivers installed, and it was working fine for months, so have the drivers got corrupted? I assume not as I get the message at boot and so thats before I get to windows, so is it the JMiron controller itself? Do I need to reflash the bios back to its factory settings? (this board is still on 1st bios release)

If I could get the damn ssd to stay up long enough so I could format it and try it on a diff pc that would help

    specification page

    Intel® Z68 chipset :
    2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray
    4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
    Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Support Intel® Smart Response Technology on 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processor family
    JMicron® JMB362 controller : *3
    1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), red
jMicron controller is only responsible for the eSATA port

also, the blue and grey SATA ports use separate controllers. So try some of the other SATA ports. Better yet, dig up another desktop/laptop computer and try it on there.

Yeah, came to the same conclusion myself. Will shove it in my wifes pc later adn see if it is stable on that as a second drive.

    Re: SSD Dead?

Nope ssd as second drive on diff pc locks up that pc as well. Its poor that not only has the ssd gone, but it kills any pc its connected too!!

Trying to make a disk to flash the ssd and wipe it. Have to see how that goes but not full of hope.

    Re: SSD Dead?

Managed to win the battle to flash the firmware but it still locks up after around 2 mins so its RMA time.

Anyone know of a good reason to not RMA with OCZ direct as Scan don't have my model in stock any more?
