Is your pc shutting down ok each time you power it down?. Improper shutdown or failed boot are normally what causes it to ask for a check.
Yes it shut downs ok.
1. Run Regedit
2. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
3. Change the BootExecute entry from:
autocheck autochk * /.........
To:
autocheck autochk *
The registry entry is already set to autocheck autochk *
Try changing it to: autocheck autochk /k:x * where x is the drive letter that is being checked.
Run the recover console off the XP cd (let the CD boot as usual, then hit r)
Run the version of chkdsk on there. I've found that for some reason, that version picks up things that XP's chkdsk doesn't
I just tried the recover console on the cd and it does report the drive has one or more errors but does not attempt to fix it. Nothing has stopped working and the drive appears to read and write ok.
Start > 'My Computer' > Right click Drive > properties > Tools tab > Error checking > Restart.
This will tell you if the disk is on the wat out. Other things it could be is a virus, corrupt Windows install or improper shutdown. Most HDD manufactures web sites have a disk checking utility to download too.
Hope this helps
I think you'll have to use /f (fix) command after checkdisk to get it to correct errors automatically.Quote:

Nothing better than a mystery solution to a problem!
