    Memory issue?

over the past month i've had two instances where i've received bsods followed by booting with an unresponsive screen.
At first i thought this was a gpu issue which put the fear of god in me as the last thing i want is to have to buy another 580...

I then found that after removing two of the four memory modules the computer booted fine, i then swapped the two modules for the other two and reseated the others in the other slots. The computer then ran fine for a good 3-4 weeks.

I've literally just had the exact same issue. Could this be a sign that the memory or the slots are faulty? Or could they be getting dusted up? i've cleaned the slots and the memory thoroughly and so far so good. but the dust covers on my case do a really good job of keeping the vast majority of the dust out as the inside of my case appears relatively dust free. No clups of dust or caked components as ive seen with other cases ive owned.

My set up is as follows:

    Asrock 880G Extreme3 Socket AM3
    Twin Frozr II gtx580
    4 x 2gb Corsair DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 Dominator Memory CL9 (9-9-9-24)
Amd Phenom II x6 1055t with (10% OC, no voltage tweeks or memory tweaks)
    Coolermaster v6 gt cpu cooler
    Corsair 850w HX modular PSU

Any further information on this would be great. Whether you think its faulty components or just dust settling in all the wrong places, any information would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

Run memtest on the unit overnight if possible to check for memory errors.

    Re: Memory issue?

What are you using the pc for when you have these crashes....is it gaming or just general browsing? Heat not an issue in the case?. Have you checked your event viewer in admin tools as it should indicate if their is an application or service error causing the problems as you may have incompatability problems.

    Re: Memory issue?

the first tie it happened i was editing, which id managed millions of times before. the second time i'd been gaming but it was like 15 minutes before the crash and i was browsing...

I'll run memtest etc. i haven't noticed the temp going high tbh. the gauges say its running ok...

    Re: Memory issue?

I had a very similar issue and it was caused by the overclock on my processor. At some point I reset the bios completely and as soon as I attempted any overclock i got a BSOD that day. The issue seemed to be down to my use of 4x1GB sticks, I swapped them out for 2x2GB sticks and there was no issue. I use the 4 x 1GB sticks on another pc and have had no issue. So my suggestion is take off the overclock, the fact it is BSOD suggests (not definite but likely) memory.

    Re: Memory issue?

Many thanks for the replies. i have not had any joy as of yet and have had a whole host of BSODs including memory_management and system_service_exception to name 2 of the popular few. i've decided off a hunch this could be my motherboard faulting what with the massive array of different bsods and possibly the memory controllers specifically due to the number of bsods relating to memory issues.

Looking to upgrade to a higher end mobo soon however have just realised something interesting. I have paid a lot more attention to my memory modules of late and now realise they are not exactly the same. although the memory timing and 1600 mhz freq remain the same the voltages noted on the module labels do differ. these are two sets of 2 x 2GB Modules of 1600mhz Corsair Dominator memory each purchased separately. the second set found after the first set were discontinued on the sites i usually purchase from. Does this preference in voltage open me up to huge memory issues that i have not foreseen or will i be alright? Note that i havent had any issues for almost a year prior, but now the BSODs come think and fast.

i can give specific details of the seperate module pairs if needed.

    Re: Memory issue?

intermittent faults are the worse to solve, i doubt if its your memory - you said = Note that i havent had any issues for almost a year prior, ( that's if the modules are not faulty ) PCB boards can crack and may still work, but they all expand and shrink to a degree, maybe your MB. Workout if it BSOD soon as comp on or after a time when the system is getting warm.

    other and that good luck!
