He says I can host files online! with out anyone even knowing.. He also warned me that my ISP might not like this... Who cares! He says I should get an static IP.. Whats that?

a ip is like a address on the internet

most users ip changed when ever there adsl/cable modem turns on and syncs

with a static ip it never changes no matter how many times you turn the modem on and off

Basicly, if you dont have a static ip, the link for your pictures or whatever would change every time your reconnected. Its called a dynamic IP, meaning its assigned from a list of available ip addresses whenever you connect.
When you pay to register a web address you are paying for that web address to be assigned to your static IP address, so that when ever someone types that web address, the address is looked up on a DNS server and the appropriate IP address is found. (By the way )

Most ISP's charge for a static IP, some more than others. MY ISP Eclipse internet let me have 6 static IP's free with my £24/month 0.5mbit ADSL account. A good deal if you ask me. I dont use any of them though lol well apart from the one for my modem/router obviuosly

if you dont want to shell out for a static ip, there are plenty of free dynamicdns services, such as dyndns.com, which will give you an auto updating domain, such as myth.dyndns.com (there are plenty of various ones to choose from), and you setup your server to update your IP on their systems, so that when somone goes to http://myth.dyndns.com they get your machine, regardless of what your IP is.
er, if your northbridge fan is humming loudly, disconnect it. _dont_ kick the side of the case, it _will_ break it.
    i know :/

http://www.dyndns.com for the registration (register an account and setup a dynamic dns service.. totally free :>)
http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html for some third party clients you can use (they send your current IP to the dyndns folks, which auto updates it to the domain you chose) i use my smoothwall box's automatic dyndns service, but those clients are fine if you dont have that (i seem to remmeber using something called "no-ip duc", no-ip is another dynamic dns service, think "no-ip duc" was their client).

some of the domains you can choose from http://myth. ...
